If you're playing to a mixed age group...

Waltzes:
The Beatles - Norwegian Wood
Debbie Boone - You Light Up My Life
Commodores - Three Times A Lady
Doris Day - Que Sera Sera
Leo Sayer - When I Need You
Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now
-- and there's always --
Brand X - Euthanasia Waltz :)

Quicksteps:
The Cure - The Lovecats
Bobby Darin - Mack The Knife
Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walkin'
Billie Jo Spears - Blanket On The Ground (segue's nicely into 'Hello Mary Lou')

You might be able to waltz to them, but these two :
The Beatles - Norwegian Wood

Leo Sayer - When I Need You
Are definitely 6/8 , even if the former was incorrectly published as a 3/4 !

I'm just back from an American Country band rehearsal and the words waltz and quickstep are fresh in my mind - if you'd like a suggestion of some country offerings for the above, I can recommend:

Working Man's Blues, Sunny Side Of My Life (Merle Haggard)
Sunday Morning Christian (think it was Kristofferson)
Chattahoochie (Alan Jackson)
Memphis Tennessee (Carl Perkins)

...for quicksteps, and:

I Always Get Lucky With You (George Jones)
I Still Believe In Waltzes (Conway Twitty/Loretta Lynn)
Oh Lord, It's Hard To Be Humble (Hank Williams)

...for waltzes, although my favourite waltz by far is 'Waltz' by Pentangle, sadly though it wouldn't see the light of day in my band!

Hope this helps :)

I realize, strictly speaking, that waltz time is 3/4.
Mind you, I don't think the couples who requested my band play the above songs were particularly bothered whether they were dancing to a 3/4 or 6/8 time sig.
As far as they were concerned, and as you intimated in your comment above, they were able to waltz to them!
moon river is the nicest waltz written.
Oops, I can't believe I forgot Moon River... doh! :)

Round these parts the biggest waltz hit is Delilah (the unofficial Welsh National Anthem) but I like "Song for the life" by Rodney Crowell.
Cover version here. Also done by John Denver and The Waterboys (on Spotify)

We occasionally get some demo dancers dancing Q/S to Bad Moon Rising

Jazz Waltzes

A Child Is Born (Thad Jones)
Afro Blue (Mongo Santamaria)
Alice In Wonderland (Sammy Fain)
All Blues (Miles Davis)
Baubles, Bangles, & Beads (Robert Wright)
Beatrice (Sam Rivers Quartet)
Besame Mucho (Wes Montgomery), 1963
Black Narcissus (Joe Henderson)
Blue Daniel (Frank Rosalino)
Bluesette (Toots Thielemans)
Elsa (Earl Zinders)
Emily (Bill Evans)
Footprints (Wayne Shorter) (debatable whether an actual waltz)
Full House (Wes Montgomery)
How My Heart Sings! (Bill Evans) from How My Heart Sings!, 1962
Hello Young Lovers (Wes Montgomery)
The Inch Worm (Frank Loesser)
It Ain't Necessarily So (George Gershwin) from Porgy and Bess)
Jitterbug Waltz (Fats Waller)
Last Tango in Paris (Gato Barbieri)
My Favorite Things (associated with John Coltrane)
Skating In Central Park (John Lewis)
Some Day My Prince Will Come (associated with Miles Davis)
Summer In Central Park (Horace Silver)
Tenderly (Walter Gross)
Three Views Of A Secret (Jaco Pastorius)
Three Wishes (Donald Byrd)
Ugly Beauty (Thelonious Monk)
Up Jumped Spring (Freddie Hubbard) from Born To Be Blue, 1981
Waltz for Debby (Bill Evans)
Valse Hot (Sonny Rollins)
Very Early (Bill Evans) from Moonbeams, 1962
West Coast Blues (Wes Montgomery) from Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, 1969
Windows (Chick Corea)

I have no idea what defines a 'quickstep' and most of the audiences I play to wouldn't know either so I will defer to others!

At the risk of being trounced on here for watching such rubbish, have a look at 'Strictly Come Dancing'
They often use modern songs for waltzes and quicksteps,of which some work and some don't! At least it makes a change
from all the usual stuff though.

I've played these waltzes recently on gigs -

Bartenders Blues - George Jones and James Taylor
With you I'm born again - Billy Preston & Syreeta
Are you lonesome tonight - Elvis
Goodnight Irene - everybody!
Fly Me To The Moon as a Waltz or Quickstep!
As a quickstep, medium up swing (or brisk)
I've played fly me to the moon thousands of times and at various tempi and (funnily enough) for strict tempo dancing.

I didn't suggest it as a waltz although I have heard it done.

Remember that the Waltz for all those nutty Ballroom Dancers, [pro's or Amatures]
is all about the tempo. [not so much the tunes]
Get that wrong and you might as well be playing Led Zep tunes..... :)

This might help.

Fortunately you haven't been trounced as hopefully the sensible folks on these forums realise that Strictly has some of the best live musicianship on UK television.

Back to the topic (and from tonight's "Strictly") - Aretha Franklin's Do Right Woman.

Thanks for that, just made a grey rainy Sunday really cool. We play (try to anyway) this version and it's a stormer. Takes me back to School days and the fact that these boys were the first "proper" band I was into.

What a fantastic band SAHB were/are and Chris Glen is cool as f*ck.

Where's the Ipod, bit of Faith Healer coming up right now!!!!
