GreeneKing
Spot that tune? The same line repeated on the NS5XL and the Euro 5 LX. Both basses fitted with a U-Retro with identical settings. Recorded direct into an Edirol R-09HR and saved as a .wav file. Guess which is which? Sean
Tough one. I think I'm going to have to use the headphones.... Ah, I remember your NS5 is Redwood/Walnut and you Euro5 is Maple/Alder. I'm guessing that the first one is the Euro5 as it's slightly tighter and sounds a bit more maple-ish (compressed). The second one is a bit warmer and I'm guessing is the Redwood/Walnut. 50/50, I'm either a genius or a fool. No, I'm definitely a fool for playing along. GreeneKing
Yes it's not easy. The basses are different but not by a huge amount. The white Euro has I believe alder wings yes. Just caught your edit Sean and you are indeed the wrong way around, 1st NS 2nd Euro. So the U-Retro has indeed become a leveller Peter Edited November 18, 2009 by GreeneKing
Sean
I've not done the guessing game with these. I've recorded both my Euro 5LX and my NS-5XL which both have U-Retro preamps and are both strung with Elixirs of near enough the same condition, both basses have the same set up and both had EQ flat and pickup blend in the mid position. I recorded through a Pandora 5 with no effects. The riff I nicked earlier this evening from the Lakland website where it is used to demo sounds - it's called Fingerfunk. If it's not quite right, please forgive me, it was a quick transcription  . The tracks were hurriedly recorded with Garageband and I used Drums On Demand Appleloops. My playing's a bit clunky but I came back from Italy yesterday with a couple of bottles of Lemoncello and opened one earlier. I haven't had a drink in months and it's hit me like a ton of... lemons. :brow: Spector Euro 5 Fingerfunk Spector NS5 Fingerfunk Edited November 18, 2009 by Sean

Sean
I've just found out the pickups in my NS5 are EMG-40Js The pickups in the Euro are EMG-40DC as expected. The big difference could be mainly due to the pickup difference. Th J pickups are dated 06 and 07 so are retro-fitted. I must say that these are monsters for single coil J pickups. Sean
I've done more samples now to reflect the pickup change so that both basses have a DC in the neck position and a J in the bridge. They still sound hugely different. Sean
And for completeness and as a control comparison , I've done the same with my Euro4. Spector Euro4 LX EMG P/J
GreeneKing
Yep, as you say Sean, very different. Much as you'd expect too. Are you in Manchester on Sunday? My Spector will likely be on the East stand, the Euro.
Sean
I think I will go on Sunday. Just had a look at the logistics and I think it's do-able. I'll be back from Saturday's gig late but what the hell. Should I take one of the Spectors or what? This thread is sooooo hijacked it's not true
GreeneKing
Hijacked? Or usefully diversified?
TBFUS
Love the Hamer and I just got my Spector back with the emg btc system installed along with emg j5's...Sounds great....Don't think I'll ever let the Hamer go but if i do I'll let you know... The Hamer is still a little stronger especially slapping but the Spector has a better fingerstyle tone...May take'em both on the road....toasted, thats the bass I just bought...drooling's finally over!!! Sean
I now have an EMG 40P in the neck position of my NS5XL. I tried this with a the DC at the bridge and it sounded very big and meaty. I then A/B'd it with the Euro4 for a couple of hours (proper practise, no noodling :snob: ) and late last night decided to try an EMG 40J in the bridge position. It now sounds as close to the Euro4 as can be possible and it is now without a doubt as good as it could sound. It was incredible before, now it's perfect. I've always been a fan of the P/J configuration and the EMGs in my Euro 4 are my favourite pickups ever so to get these replicated in the NS5 has made me very happy indeed. I'll post sound files at the weekend.

Thanks again! Jack
Sean
I use 45 - 105 + 125TW (I think). I have thought about going to 40 - 100 but that'll be months away with these things, they still sound new after 6 months Theoretically they should be less tight. If you try this, let us know what you think.
