Lew-Bass Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 (edited) Looking to start a band focusing on the slower, more Ska end of the spectrum but still using rock influences to keep it modern. I have this song as a basis for the music I envision (with a different vocal style!): Propagandhi - Haille Sellasse... Anyone know of other bands/songs like this? Thanks Lewis Edited November 12, 2009 by Lew-Bass Quote
waynepunkdude Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Mad Caddies, Lees Than Jake, Tyrannosaurus Alan (their bass player comes on here), Mighty Bosstones, Battleska Gallactica, Fandangle..... I could go on. Oh check out my band. Quote
Musicman20 Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Man I love Propagandhi..there were a lot of 90s American punk bands doing that kind of thing. Im trying to think.... Quote
thisnameistaken Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 (edited) Bit of Skints maybe? They're more rootsy, very good though.
Fishbone are worth checking out
They're so mental I love those guys, not so many slow numbers in their back catalogue though. Wil Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Streetlight Manifesto! Definately the more go-y end of the spectrum though. Check out the bassline in the verse of this, it's brilliant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqB7sQi6xAA Quote
Mykesbass Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Try these guys - don't know if they fit your genre but as Duke Ellington said, "there's only two types of music, good and bad". I'm an old jazz & blues fart but I still think these guys fit in the former category: http://www.myspace.com/kingprawnvideos Quote
Bassman101 Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Look up TrueBeat, a band of a friend and mentor of mine. Quote
Jono Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 (edited) + 1 for Skints. Saw them with Sonic Boom 6 and I thought they were actually better than SB6 which is going some... I also highly recommend the Dance Hall Crashers for twin female-fronted ska punk goodness. Don't think Sublime have been mentioned either. Edited November 12, 2009 by Jono Quote
Lew-Bass Posted November 12, 2009 Author Posted November 12, 2009 (edited) Thanks for all the replies guys, at the moment Less Than Jake are coming closest to what I envision as of yet. As for the vocals, and guitar work/sound, I was thinking something akin to Naive by The Kooks. Would that type of thing fuse well with slow, slightly morose basslines ala some ska songs? (All subjective I know, but I'm needing some help piecing it together in my head!) I guess I should add, I'm not looking to start a strictly ska band of such, just try and create a new mix of music that would utilize certain attributes from it Edited November 12, 2009 by Lew-Bass Quote
William James Easton Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 too much focus on what to play. just play, it'll work out teruer that way. p.s. against all authority Quote
