boab
I have a 1969 P bass with original pickups and would like to upgrade them. I play with a good solid bottom end and plenty of string presence. You can hear and see the bass on www.vimeo.com/nutbros if you listen to the last verse you may hear what sound I like (this also has a synth under it though) I play through a Roost 250w valve head with a Music man 4x12" bass cab and sometimes with a 15" or 18" under it. Im looking at dimarzio model P, EMG PHZ, wizard Pickups and kent armstrong (I put a pair of these on my Tokai Jazz and enjoy the sound) Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Boab

Highly recommend him, he made me two pickups to go with my Nordy preamp that I fitted in my main bass (pictured).
Jase
I've just put some Wizard Area 51's in my P bass REALLY good! Wizard Area 51 Stealth
Hamster
Personally I'd keep the '69 original and buy another P bass to tinker with!
wateroftyne
What are you trying to achieve that your current pickups lack?
stinson
I echo WOT's question. I replaced my 75P bass pickup with a Wizard Trad and am delighted with it. If you decide to go ahead, have a word with Andy at Wizard, he's very helpful.
niceguyhomer
+1.9 for Andy at Wizard Pickups - wouldn't buy anything else.
chris_b
Leave the bass alone and buy a preamp like the Sadowsky. You'll keep the value of the bass intact and get a better spread of tones than you'll get by just changing the pickup.
JTUK
agree, keep the value in the stock bass, and if you MUST change them, make sure the originals can go straight back it.

Tinman
Having listened to the track I can't see why you would want to change. Your tone is great as it stands in my opinion
Sean
John East will soon have a retro-fit P-retro preamp for P basses that you can fit without changing the original spec; he's got one on his '62 P. I think they're due for release in January. Thread here. If it's as good as the U and J, it'll be another world beater. I'm having one. Stealth Area 51 + P-retro + Serious Valve Amp = tone heaven.
