HarryPotter
Been playing bass now for a whopping 2 months (or so) and really enjoying it. However, most of what I play in anger are Church songs - and for these I am playing music that wasn't intended for a bass guitar so I find myself running out of depth (I know I can simply play higher up etc. but I feel it would be better if I went deeper instead of higher). With this in mind are there any sensibly priced (say less than £300) 5 stringers I should consider. Current bass is a Cort Curbow, which I really like and get along with. I also dont have the worlds longest fingers so skinnier necks should be borne in mind. I dont mind SH (in fairness I prefer it as I am getting a better deal) so what would you recommend? TIA. cockbongo
My first 5 string was a Yamaha RBX-375, and it was so good i still play it from time to time instead of my Warwick. Have a look around and you'll find one for about under £300 easily - I can highly recommend them for the price. Machines
Consider a Yamaha BB415/615.
wotnwhy
the yamaha BB series offer good value and lurvly tone, deep and punchy, which would probably work well in the setting your playing in. but if you like your curbow, why change? maby just get yourself a 5 string version? with regards to your smaller hands. the OLP basses have tighter string spacing and are fantastic to play. so put them on the list to. Jean-Luc Pickguard
I got a Peavey Millennium Active 5 string for £199 recently just to play about with. Its a very nice bass for the money. It looks great as well with a lovely quilted maple veneer top and dark purple finish.
HarryPotter
Cheers guys, the Tonly Levin OLP looks the b*ll*x, I could just do with finding one to try.... I can try the Yamaha's and the Ibanez's out at a local shop to see if I can 'gel' with them - I am very fussy about finding a neck that I like (I didn't like the 4 string variants as much as a curbow). stewblack
+1 for the OLP. If you were further south you'd be welcome to try mine. If ever you're passing this way give me a shout.
Owen
I bought a Mazeti bass off Ebay for £120 about a year ago, simply because I could not stop myself. I am frankly embarrassed by the amount of money I have spent on kit over the years (Just for reference Sei, US Lak, Lak Skyline, MM Bongos) and I can say with my hand on my heart that the Mazeti is just FANTSTIC value for money. Totally excellent B. Here is a link to a fretless one on at the mo http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZETI-WALNUT-THRU-N...1QQcmdZViewItem Keep an eye on the seller and a fretted one will eventually appear. My other present obsession is the old MTD kingston series. They have rubbish re-sale so go for next to nothing (£150/£200). Much wider necks than the Mazetis but a commanding B and light light light. And there you have it. Edited October 11, 2007 by owen

But...it's a big budget job new, not so much (but still a lot) pre-owned (sounds better than used or s/h don't you think??) guitarnbass
I'd get what I've got, a MIJ jackson V. They're quite rare though, but £300 would probably buy you one in relatively good condition. It's a very easy 5 string to play, in any style.
