We also have three tunes written by band members, but as we're not members of the PRS it wouldn't count anyway. It's really only a preview as we don't have enough tunes for a full 90 minute set but everyone's very interested to hear us.

We don't have enough songs even for a 30 min set. We have 3 original as well and the cover song is just there to fill space and we're going to finish another song so we have stuff to play for 30 mins. Once we write more original songs, we won't play the cover anymore. I'm just thinking out loud what's the likelihood that some authoritive person will tell the band to stop playing cover songs? Not that it matters cuz as BigRedX said, the venue is covered by insurance so the band won't need to pay for royalties.

Nor can they. Unless the venue specifies 'originals only' as band-night policy and you kick off with Mustang Sally. OTOH, if anyone's ever encountered a 'Covers Inspector' from HM Gov Department for Culture, Media and Sport, I'm happy to be corrected.
