richardcoughlan
Hey guys, Im after an OC-2, but after reading countless sites, mostly contradicting each other, I still don't know what the differences are between the 3 versions of this pedal ( i think there are 3! ) Does anyone have any experience with these pedals? Do any particular ones have a better reputation for build quality etc? (Anyone want to sell me theres ) Any words of wisdom would be great Cheers Rich
Kev
Collectors like to imagine the jap ones sound better, but in reality there is no difference between any of the models.
Protium
I've got a Japanese one only because it was the only one I saw for sale. There is also an "octaver" version that people ask silly money for - also no difference.
noelk27
Well, as you'd expect, major differences between the different generations of the pedal, between OC2 and OC3. But, when it comes to the specification of the OC2, very little about it changed in technical terms throughout its production. Initially it was badged Octaver, and was finished in a lighter shade of brown, before being badged Octave and changing to the more familiar dark brown. The one major changed in technical specification was the alteration to the circuitry to accommodate the PSA adaptor (circa '97). Having owned a few examples of the OC2, there was no identifiable performance difference to my ear - a Japanese black label sounds the same as a Taiwanese black label. Kev
In summary, if you see a jap one going cheap or same price as the Taiwanese, buy it for its value, but don't bother paying over the odds for one, simply is not worth it.

bobbass4k
I've got an original black labal japanese octaveR, i payed an extra fiver over a tawianese octave so that I can sell it for £150 on ebay, buy a tawainese octave for £40 and pocket the difference if I ever need it. There's zero difference in sound as far as i can tell, same circuit same components, the process may have changed slightly as I opened mine up and it's on perfboard with everything mounted vertically (it uses a CRAPLOAD of resistors btw, counted at least 35, and germ diodes too), I imagine they switched to pcb's at some point, but I A/B'ed it with a tawianese octave and they sounded identical
