arsenic
This is something I have wondered about.... Would something like a Squier Bronco with a set of D'Addario EXL280 (short, for up to 32" scale), work. I realise something would have to be done with the Nut -buy a blank and file it for the right guage????
cLepto-bass
I turned my old Squier P-Bass into a make shift Piccolo bass buy buying a set of D'Addario piccolo strings and a nut blank. Despite its relative ease, it actually works really well.
The Burpster
hasnt Walbassist just parted company with one of these (A Villette IIRC) that is now residing in the galllery looking for a new home......?
benebass
I tried stringing one of my Yamaha BEX-4s (on sale here) with a set of D'Addario EXL280s a while ago & didn't need to make any adjustments to the nut (it was set up with Thomastik flats before) - maybe I was just lucky there, but for £15 it might be worth buying a set to see what you think (Strings Direct have them here). Really enjoyed the whole piccolo thing myself & thought it sounded great - the BEX has a piezo pickup in the bridge, which worked really well with the higher tuning... The only downsides were that the unwound G string took a bit of getting used to and, on a 34" scale, the string tension was a bit tight when tuned EADG. Depending on your tastes, a short scale bass may be the way to go (that's probably what I'll end up doing at some point), although the harmonics probably won't be as rich. Mind you, opting for a non-standard tuning on a piccolo can give you some great results & probably won't be such an ordeal on your fingers: - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NNwmwWX4LM...feature=channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY4Ra2KOyas&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGOWUcGEaGY Cheers, B. Not originally intended as a piccolo, but can be strung as such. Phil
kevbass
I think im going to get a cheap 70's teisco or satelite short scale or something and put some piccolo strings on it

He had it strung ADGC but I changed it to regular EADG tuning, although BEAD worked equally well. Designed for nylon strings. It's a nice instrument and in very good condition, but I moved it on quite quickly as I realised it just wasn't for me.
BigRedX
Here's mine: Made by Manne, it's called a Mandobass. Essentially it's a 26" scale 4-string guitar. I use it for doubling up with a standard bass to create faux 8-string bass parts with the advantage that the octaves don't always have to follow the main bass line. Makes things a bit more interesting and if any of my stuff ever gets famous it will give 8-sting bassists a real head-ache trying to figure out! purpleblob
I've so wanted a piccolo since my earliest days of listening to Stanley Clarke, but never found anything suitable (such as a cheap Stanley Clarke Alembic picollio ).
