Faithless
So, for the first time in my life, I had a chance to see one of the most innovative today's players, Hadrien Feraud, live. It was Billy Cobham's band, that this year played in Lithuanian jazz festival "Mama Jazz", as headliners. There were other great bands, like Rosario Giuliani Quintet from Italy, with Darryl Hall on double bass, and such.. But when I've seen Hadrien's name in festival's advert, I was gobsmacked.. Yes, I've seen Victor Wooten live, but his 'own' stuff with his band didn't make me any sense, and, stilistically, he's, IMO, far away from Jaco, whom I love.. So, it was a chance to see Jaco's 'successor' (don't get me wrong..) for real. And the experience actually was very good - at the gig's day, in the morning, I came to Billy's masterclass, hoping to see his band and Hadrien, and I wasn't wrong - all band was in the place! Moreover, it wasn't actual masterclass, it was more like a rehearsal (there's one interesting bit in that - Hadrien rehearsed with band only that morning, and a bit more in the hotel before the gig! He himself said, that it was very hard gig, as it was his first gig with Billy, but he done rather well, if'd we would look at those weird time signatures and unison lines he had to remember..) Gig itself was fascinating, I've been watching Hadrien 90% of the time, got to admit, I was once again blown away by his solos, 'flavoured' with some wah-wah, aaaand by his technique. Astouding stuff. Oh, not to forget, he was using his new Ken Smith Hadrien Feraud 5 string (strung B to G, which was quite strange to me.. ) signature - cracking sounding bass! aand, a few pedals - volume, wah-wah, some MXR pedal (maybe compressor), some EQ pedal - I actually haven't looked closely.. We had a little nice chat after, I was wondering, if's he really down-to earth chap, and he really was! We talked a bit about the gig, technique, Jaco, his new album, I've also got his signature, on top of Billy's, here it is: Awfully big experience for me, and I think, for the first time in my life, I've got a musician to follow to.. at last Just wanted to share, Faith. wombatboter
Nice to hear that you had a great time...he surely is one of those astounding new voices in bass-land. And congrats on your attempt to write in English...I also know how hard that is sometimes :-)
