Deep Thought Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 It has been suggested (not by me) that our band should learn a Xmas song for our next gig in December. I'm of the opininon that there have only been about three decent Xmas songs ever written, and I cannot stomach the usual Slade/Wizzard etc. etc. Call me a miserable git if you will (guilty as charged) but the vast majority of Xmas songs make me cringe, especially lyrically. To be fair, the fact that I'm working nights from the 24th to the 26th of December does tend to knock some of the gilt off the gingerbread as far as me and Xmas are concerned. If left to me, it would be The Steely-eyed Missile Men's Bah Humbug, Boll*x to Xmas night, but I'm outvoted. Anybody know of any lesser-known Xmas songs, especially with something of a blues flavour? Or are we stuck with Ricky Tomlinson's 'Xmas my arse'? Quote

Low End Bee Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Sanity Clause - the Damned? Not very bluesy though. Quote
Sonic_Groove Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 "I believe in Farther christmas" -- Greg Lake --- Musical inspiration by Prokofiev & Sinfeild's lyrics are as poignant today as they ever were. Lennon's "merry xmas (war is over)" does the job also. Brendan Quote

Cat Burrito Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 I really like the Phil Spector album with Christmas (Baby Please COme Home). We did Rocking around the Xmas Tree last year which was good fun. It's just a bit of fun after all Quote

Marvin Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) I've always liked Fairy Tale of New York - Pogues/McColl. Always bandied about at Christmas. However, I'll admit this may not be appropriate for your band. Edited November 23, 2009 by Marvin Quote

casapete Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Try and listen to 'Please come home for Christmas'. Originally done by Charles Brown, but better known due to covers by Southside Johnny (on Home Alone 1 or 2 OST,cant remember which!), and also The Eagles and Bon Jovi. Easy bluesy 12:8 style tune, lots of scope for bluesy guitar break too! Quote

Deep Thought Posted November 23, 2009 Author Posted November 23, 2009 Thanks all-some fine suggestions, and whilst looking at them I found this, which I think might do the trick:- http://open.spotify.com/track/0vPDg3dtx6O7eV1kCEFHe1 Fairytale of New York is in fact one of the few I like, although the fact that we're an all-male three-piece kind of puts the mockers on that one for us. A couple of years ago the Killers released this as a fairly little-known limited download, which I think is probably the best Xmas song I've ever heard. No good to us, but I love it. Cheers all. Quote
