Doing the relic thing (parts)

Question!
If you were putting something like an audere into an older bass and didn't want the nice n shiny like of a new plate and knobs on your old, mojo'd bass, how would you go about making the new bits, less new looking? Please don't say, leave them out in the garden for the next 30 years

I've read that soaking metal parts in pcb etchant will make them tarnish, I've not tried it myself tho'
