spongebob
I've always used kind of a 'whatever' cable between my bass and amp, never really been too fussed what it is/was as long as it worked! However, I've recently been reading about the importance of a good cable, and how much it can affect the sound. I'm playing a Ric 4003 or a Geddy Jazz through a Markbass 121P with New York Cab. Basically, I'm looking to buy a quality cable. What kind of brands/types should I look at, and what kind of price am I facing?
misrule
Our very own Dave Polglaze at bassic-bits does great cables. Website here Cheers Mark
jmesa
I reckon there should be an "obbm or stfu" emoticon. Would get used a lot ! Edited December 1, 2009 by jmesa
The Burpster
OBBM is the man, will make them up for sensible money.....
basshead56
Monster bass cables. Expensive, but amazingly worth it! Cant gush enough about them since I bought a pair of them on the advice of our soundman. Seriously amazing low-end clarity. Mega-huge difference between them and any other cable i´ve ever used! BigRedX
You may want to read up on Monster Cable's over zealous litigation department and other questionable business practices before buying any of their products.
The Burpster
Haven't Monster cables been known to have resistors built into them to filter out mids and highs to get the "bassy sound..." was a big article somewhere in one of the comics a few years ago.... My g'tarist used to use a (very expensive) Whirlwind cable (I'm sure he paid well over £40- for a braided toaster one) until I made him one the same spec as OBBM does. He hasnt used the Whirlwind since, quoting the Van Damme and Neutrik lead is brighter and looses less signal than the Whirlwind.....
Noisyjon
Another big +1 for Dave and his Bassic Bits instrument and speaker cables from me. Go for it, you will not be disappointed. Regards, Jon.

lemmywinks
+1 for obbm Anything with Neutrik connectors and Van Damme cable should be good, get nice thick cable for speaker leads Works out cheaper to make your own up especially if you can score some cheap components, they crop up on here from time to time. Or just save yourself the hassle and give obbm a shout!

Are they mad-unethical like Gibson or something? Haven't heard anything bad about them, though i've not realy been that interested either. What's the story with them? BigRedX
A simple Google search will tell you everything you need to know. Start with the controversy section in this Wikipedia entry. Then go on to read how they tried to stop Monster Mini Golf using the word Monster in their name which thankfully they lost although that hasn't stopped them from going after just about any company using the word Monster whether they are in the audio/video/cabling business or not. Practices that make Rickenbacker's Mr Hall and his trademark protection look decidedly saintly! Also check out their spurious patent infringement claims against Blue Jeans Cable where they most certainly picked on the wrong person to try their usual intimidation techniques against. This one hasn't gone any further, but only because the president of Blue Jeans Cable was sufficiently clued up about IP law to call their bluff. It might be slightly forgiven if Monster Cables products were demonstrably better than any other properly made inter-connect using the correct cables and connectors. But they're not. Back to the OP's question. If you are suitably skilled with the use of a soldering iron and have the time to do a proper job using decent quality components then make your own cables. Otherwise get in contact with OBBM. misrule
Just to clarify for the OP, Dave Polglaze, bassic-bits and OBBM are the same company. Cheers Mark

Well, I won´t be buying any new cables from them, though I will definately continue using the two i have for the time being. I haven´t had any experience with any of their home audio cables or HDMI or whatever, but I would happily take ´The Pepsi Challenge" using the two bass ones I´ve got and any of the other cables I have lying around, there is most definately a difference. Thanks for the heads up mate

hillbilly deluxe
I've used the same Whirlwind cable for 12 years or so,no problems. The spare that i got at the same time is still unused in the wrapper.

gafbass02
I feel a bit bad now, my whole rig is wired with monster, speaker cables, patch leads the lot. Except the mains cable, that's a QED one I picked up while working at richer sounds.
