rjb
Mmm. I'd be very tempted to get it restored to 4 strings if it was mine. Edited December 2, 2009 by rjb

allighatt0r
I would have thought it would have been smarter to use that extra tuner for the G string rather than the D... I also wonder what the bridge is like.... Would it be worth less or more if it had never had this mod made? Three cheers for innovation and bodge jobs!!! TDM
That string alignment doesn't look quite right.
Lfalex v1.1
Is it tuned EADGC or BEADG though? I can't tell! If it's the former, I'd rather have one of the old fender V's with 14(?) frets...
BigRedX
Judging from the brass nut it might well be a 70s conversion. Too many compromises to fit an extra string while still using all the old bridge and pickups.
Happy Jack
What an idiot - how could he not realise that his standard, working-man's bass would be worth an absolute fortune 50 years later when he was already dead? Some people are so selfish ...

iamthewalrus
I'm wondering if the guy who owned this bass fitted one those conversion kits they used to advertise in BP in the early days? If it is, it looks 'orrible! Cheers, iamthewalrus
Metal-Mariachi
Sad.. From the looks, stripped paint and the added tuner, I’d say a ‘70s conversion. A lot of butchery was going on back then. Esquires and Less Paul jrs routed for humbuckers, extra pickups added. Lots of paint stripping for that bare wood look. I wonder how many custom color treasures were lost. It’s probably tuned E-C which was popular on the Bass V. MM
4 Strings
I think its great. These old guitars are interesting for their history not because they are like those in the catalogues, there are loads of Precisions in excellent condition due to hardly any use. Basses, especially Precisions, are tools of a trade and I prefer it when they're used as such. If they need modifying to perform as required, then they need to be modified. I agree it must have been carried out a long while ago and yet no-one has reverted it to 4 strings. I wonder what music he played to cause him to go to so much trouble? I wonder how much musical pleasure this old bass was able to give. (Having said that, its a bit of a bodge so he could have gone to a little more trouble!) bigsmokebass
......... 'THE' reason as to why Fender braught out a 5 string precision, maybe? dont get me wrong, back in the 70's it would have been ace but looking at it now just makes me want to cry as to how amaizng it would still eb in its origional form i think it would sound mint either EADGC or BEADG, both got thier pro's and cons for a pbass. anyone got the NEW Fender V pbass? lemme know what you think as i want one and got the money at the ready
