EOS650
I saw a video hosted on YouTube that someone linked here of a Japanese player (can't remember his name) playing a Bass with a Trem arm on it. I was wondering if this has been done elsewere? I'm assuming it's possible to do this..has anyone had any experiences with this? I know it goes way beyond the need of most bass players, but I like it and can see myself using one. Does the Fender Jaguar bass have one or is this something you'd need to have done custom? Thanks! BigRedX
There's at least one basschat member with a trem-equiped bass. The most common system for bass is the Kahler one. Unfortunately because the site is written completely in Flash I can't give you a direct link but go to 'products' and take it from there... The Burpster
Bigsby make one too...... IIRC the Ovation Ultra had one fitted as an option....... Not sure about a Fender with one fitted as std..... I think no is a safe answer!
EOS650
Thanks. I'll have to look into one of those Kahler trems. Is it true that they go out of tune easily?
7string
A Hipshot bass trem for 4 & 5 strings is available from www.warmoth.com for $170. Bear in mind though, that your bass will need some routing to accomodate the springs, block and claws, so be sure that you really want it done !! EOS650
Thanks. I wasn't going to do it to my current bass, but eventually buy one for this purpose. Thanks for the link! Is the tuning with these things ok? I've seen some pretty nasty stuff written on Harmony Central about them, but it was mainly for 6 string guitar and not bass... I want to make sure that this trem system won't be more trouble than it's worth...
dangerboy
I've got a Kahler on one of my P-basses (had a fun couple of days routing for it with a dremel). I expected the worst, and the first couple of times i used it I had my tuner on bypass to constantly check the pitch - but in fact it's very stable. It'll go out of tune if you do huge divebombs that slacken the strings, but in normal use it's fine. I just don't worry about it anymore. bnt
You're probably thinking of Yoshihiro Naruse (Narucho), from Casiopea - the guy with the green 8-string, starting about 2:20: I remember this because he was mentioned a couple of months ago, and I liked the look of the Tune basses he plays. I liked them so much that I bought a TWB43 (Bubinga), about 6 weeks ago. (See my avatar too.) But a whammy on an 8-string still seems like a bit of a gimmick to me. PS: Billy Sheehan has a bass with a Kahler whammy, here.
