Pow_22
Hi, Newbiw here. Just purchased a 2nd hand Burns Bison reissue Bass. It clearly needs a good set up (intonation, string height etc) and there is a slight buzz so maybe a truss rod tweak. Anyone recommend any good luthiers in the Manchester/north west area? Ive been quoted £35 at a luthiers based in PMT Music Shop in Mancheser and theirs a guy called Phil Hartley who has a website based in Bolton. Anyone any experiences of these or know any others they could recommend? Thanks,
warwickhunt
£35 is cheap/reasonable for a good set-up... but it's bloody expensive if the guy just chucks new strings on it and gives it back 'as-is'. There's a list of luthiers on this sticky - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26654 Dave Wilson is NW (ish) and an absolutely top guy for setting up repairs. However, it'll cost you nearly £35 to drive to him or have your bass couriered there and back!
umcoo
Theres machesterguitartech.co.uk or a guy called ged green in cheshire (maybe?). Never tried either but I'm in need of a decent setup so I might try manchesterguitar man
Rayman
Ged Green in Cheadle or Steve Robinson (manchesterguitartech) in Sale, both recommended.
RayFW
+1 to any of Ged Green, Steve Robinson or Phil Hartley. If you're in North Manchester, Matt Ryan is very good (only used him for guitar mind, not bass): http://www.guitarrepairer.com/
stu the map
i've used Phil Hartley just a few months ago - very pleased with the results.
lozbass
I would recommend Ged Green without reservation - he's worked on Foderas, Alembics, Celinders, Fenders, Seis etc. for me and the results have been outstanding (both set-ups and more detailed work). His turnaround is fast and he's extremely reliable - he's also highly knowledgeable, professional and friendly. Ged - based in Cheadle, around two hudred metres from the village centre - is a full-time builder, luthier and tech. Steve Robinson (Manchesterguitartech) has also done some good set-ups for me and is also recommended.

AdamWoodBass
+ 1 for Ged, great attention to detail and a top bloke. His custom basses are pretty tasty too!
Pow_22
Cheers for that peeps, phone Phil this mornin n booked the bass in for next week. Hopefully it is just in need of a good setup and nothing more serious. Slight fret buzz on the D string between 3rd and 7th and a bit of a bridge rattle on open A. Fingers crossed! ead
I've just had a set up done on my 5-string by Phil Hartley as well as some upgrades on a fretless base, and I think he has done some excellent work and would recommend him to anybody looking for this type of service in the North West. The set-up cost £40 so not too bad price wise as it included some work on the nut and he also replaced some washers on the tuners. Very thorough. http://www.guitarsetup.co.uk/contact.php I have also used the very excellent Steve Robinson in the past. Phil is much closer to home for though! karlfer
Richard Thomson, Thomson guitars, Wigan. Done all my basses except my latest weakness, and he will get that very soon! Richard does a fantastic job. Karl.
