Meanwhile, somewhere in La-La Land, there's a fretless fiver with a BiN of £550!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Colletion-Fretless-Custom-5-string-bass-made-in-Japan-/231824666605?hash=item35f9d3afed:g:hy4AAOSw5dNWnlFQ

In fairness, it is listed as a Bass Colletion, so maybe it's a rare transitional model ...

Very pleased to have picked up one of these yesterday. From the info in this thread I've ascertained it's Japanese, made in 1991 and probably a SB315.
In good nick and for the price I paid it seems like I couldn't have found a better bargain.

Yes. OK. A new set of strings are on the way and then I'll give it a full clean. The previous owner was an elderly chap with a painful wrist who, although admitted to neglecting it these last few years, had been reluctant to sell it on. Pots are a bit scratchy and there's detritus to clear from all the hard to reach crevices but it'll come good. Feels like one of the better made guitars I've handled over the years. Confirmation of the model would be good. SB315?

That sounds like a replacement preamp has been fitted. Push pull is probably an active/passive. One will be blend and one volume, the others will be some combination of treble, bass, mids, tone etc.

Originally you would have had blend, vol, treble and bass.

Yikes, an extra string and more controls to fiddle with. This'll take some getting used to.

Mine also had Seymour Duncan PU's on an active circuit. Probably a retrofit but hey.

For a moment I thought I'd bought this bass mentioned earlier but it still says SGC on one of the pickup covers.

The BC five string I had was really easy to play. A dream. As five strings go anyway

When I switched from guitar to bass aBass Collection was the tool that made it all possible. A replaced tuner, someone had butchered the electronics but the previous owner restored it to working if not aesthetic order - I think I paid £110 for it. It didn't (and still doesn't) have and knobs fitted and a mix of splined and smooth pot shafts - its a player not a keeper! I've not seen another pewter/silver one.

The SGC logo is very clearly marked in gold on the top of each p/up but there is no sign of a serial number on the inside of the cavity plate. BBoT bridge, non-brass nut but active so I'm guessing an early SB310?

That was the last generation of dedign, just before the brand died. There was a public competition to design the successor to the SB series and that was the result.

Probably seen better days but at £95 BIN could be worth a bite...

So tempting - if it was a 4 string I'd probably have dived in by now...

Just bought another one - a SB100 series - believe this to be one of the later models built in Japan. The strings (nickel?) have seen better days but still have a bright and kicking tone. Action could go down a few mm - possibly 4 or 5 - a friend has always set up his own basses so will be dropping it off to him tomorrow. Usual fantastic neck and balance. I can't believe that these can still be picked up for around £100.
