I think that my one up above is from 1988. :) and wow, that is pink.

I sold a 1988 fretless in that lovely see-through wine-red earlier this year. Beautiful bass but it couldn't sit there not being played.

My current SB320 is a one from 1995. My very first one was a pearl white SB301 that I bought brand new in 1994 from a music shop in Preston for £330. Best reason for taking out a student loan ever.

Just picked this guy up yesterday, looks like it's never been out the case:

I saw this in the Nanyo Facebook group and liked it very much! I've also just posted up two really old scans on the Nanyo brochure. I may have uploaded them into this thread several pages back too.

Nice to see some activity in here again.
I need to reduce the collection by one bass - potentially could be my Pink Nanyo or my SB320 but I don't know if I can bear to part with them...

Posted (edited)

Despite owning ... ahem ... a number of basses that are considerably more valuable, I still routinely pick up my SB320 when I fancy a bit of bass noodling at home.

That means that it's pushing out of the way several vintage Fenders, Mike Lull, Alleva Coppolo, Wal and Status.

It cost me well under £300, and that's including the new flatwounds I installed.

I've been searching for a long time, but I've never even got close to finding another bass that offers so much for so little.

A fine haul today sadly the 330 must be sold, the fiver is also active but which model is it?

As an incurable aficionado of all things MIJ, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I've never owned an SGC Nanyo.

Go on,someone flog me one for cheap., A pink one would be nice.

Ha - the pink one above is mine.
Probably not for sale as earmarked for daughter - also must confess I have a doubt over whether it is a MIJ Nanyo, notice the offset pot nearest the bridge. I believe this to be one tell tale sign of a non MIJ version, although I have seen basses quoted as MIJ with this in evidence as well.

I also have a SB320 Sunburst one:

Similar to this - http://basschat.co.u...llection-sb320/

In fact it may well be that one - could be tempted to part with it.

That one only sold a few weeks ago, I think you would have remembered. Pm TheGreek, he is looking for one.

Hey, this is surely one of the most ancient threads on Basschat! Good to see it still alive and kicking. :)
Here are some pics of my Bass Collection, generously given to me as a present by the OP (several years after he started this thread!). It's a blond lefty, but not the same bass pictured at post No 113.

Hi all !

Specifically signed up for this thread. Im hoping you guys could give me a hand on this one:

Found a bass collection speakeasy 5 strings going for 400Gbp.
I havent phisically seen it, only by the pics.
Trouble is im not sure of the model number, the owner reckons its an SB460.
Then its got all the hints of being constructed in Japan but showes serial number: 981550.
Following Happy Jack's info (Thanks!) it should of been manufactured in 1998, all ready in the korean built era.. confusing..
Original Pickups have been exchanged for a pair of EMG's.

Please help me shed some light on this so I spend my money wisely. Ive uploaded some pics, unfortunatly not the sharpest either.

Is it worth the money?

Thanks guys

Hi Thomas, welcome aboard.

The cover plate is quite specific that this is a MIJ bass, so I'd be happy to go with that. What I'd be less happy about is that it looks like all the electrics have been replaced.

The photos are not clear enough, but those appear to be EMG pickups (and not a perfect fit on the neck pickup), and the knobs look like an EMG preamp too.

There's nothing wrong with EMG if that's the sound you like, but the original SGC pickups and preamp are very warm and mellow and have a lot to do with giving these basses their character.

£400 is definitely pretty top end for an SGC Nanyo, even for a 460, and for that sort of money I'd be looking for an all-original example.

All of which said, these remain some of the nicest and most under-valued basses in the market place. For £400 you'd struggle to find a pre-owned modern Squier or MIJ Fender which will match that bass for quality or playability.
