ashevans09 Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 (edited) Soooo... Long story short, been ODing on Alice in Chains recently and been catching as many of their shows in the UK as possible, and I just can't get over how good Mike Inez's spector sounds. It's colossal! I've been lucky enough to play spectors before so I know I like how they play etc etc, but I am now seriously considering moving on a load of my basses (not the MTD, never letting that thing go, love it to pieces ) plus a load of other things to fund one. So yeah...just show me some Spector porn . And also talk me out of selling off my Pedulla and '78 P for this (they both are secondary to other basses so don't get used as much as they should). I'm eyeing a Euro4LX with a PJ config. Edit for spelling. Edited December 9, 2009 by ashevans09 Quote
Sean Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 (edited) I have three - all with East U-Retro preamps and they sound huge and that big sound is very addictive. The Euro 4LX I have is an absolute monster, there are some clips here and some photos and good words here and loads more here. Build quality of Spectors is top notch, just can't fault them. I've just ordered an EMG 40P5 for my NS5 to make it sound a bit more like the Euro4 but that's for another thread another day... I keep meaning to do some nice photos of them all together but the light is rubbish lately Edited December 9, 2009 by Sean Quote
Kiwi Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Have you fitted those Wizard soapbars Sean? Quote

They're back out, though. Nice pickups but very different from what I wanted. I thought they'd be perfect for someone's Ibanez SR or Lakland 55-01 especially if they took advantage of the coil taps. Shame I haven't got anything to transplant them into. Quote
longtimefred Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 i have had 4 Spectors in the past and they have all been great. Have had the NS2000Q5 Korean 5 string Neck thru, my first one and loved it. Was awsome. NS2000REX, Korean Rex Brown signature bass with the holoflash finish. This was my main stage tool for about 4 years and served me very well, was gutted to sell it. Only downside was when it was under the microscope of the recording studio, just didnt cut the mustard. NS2000Q4 - 4 string version of my first one, had a few tuning demons so didnt last long... Euro5LX - Probably one of the best build basses i have owned. Sounded incredible and was just pure stunning. Just couldnt get on with the Tonepump pre amp in it, lacked mid range and just couldnt get it to cut through the rest of the band. If it sounded like my Stingray, i would have kept it! Go check out the Euro range in my opinion. They rule.. Quote

niceguyhomer Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I've had 4 Spectors - I love 'em to bits. Best value for money out there IMO. I'm not fond of the Tone Pump preamp and swapped the last one for an ACG02 which was a big improvement but too fiddly to use live. GreeneKing's water cured redwood Spector is the best bass I've ever played bar none. I pray every day that he's getting sick of it cos I would find the money for that one Quote
RussFM Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I've had two Legends and a Q4, wish I'd never have sold the first one as it was perfect, but I was only thrashing punk out on Fenders at the time so it never got played. My current Legend's neck isn't 100% smooth on the back, but in terms of playability, comfort and tone, Spectors are the best basses I've ever played. I'm gassing for a Euro. Quote
kets Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 My first Spector was an NS 2000/5 which was awesome. Great feel, sound and build quality, the only problem was that I found the string spacing a bit tight at the bridge end, so I swapped it for something else on here. I've now got a Legend Classic 4, which I love! It's great for the money, highly recommended. I'd love a Euro in the future... Quote
Chris2112 Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Ah, my old Spector. It was so good it made me sell my Status Stealth 6 string! I picked it up when I was in Preston, it was an awesome bass. I wasn't planning on buying when I was there but a sit down with this bass made me change my mind! It was so good I even took it on a torturous journey home in a gig bag, complete with having to travel over the most dire parts of England across to from Preston to halifax and then on to York before getting home! It was an absolute beast. So much bark and growl and with an amazing bright slap tone. I sold it for peanuts too, chasing another Status which I sold to buy my Warwick! Quote
Mog Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Played the Legend classic a few times and they were very nice. Anyone know what the deal is with the set neck design on the legend custom? Seems to me that set neck + bass string tension= loadsa neck bow. Quote
whynot Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I've an almost new lefty Spector Euro LX5 on it's way to me for a very good price. I notice a couple of people have mentioned changing the preamp but what is the main reason for this, mainly down to the lack of mid frequency control ? Quote
Sean Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 (edited)
I've an almost new lefty Spector Euro LX5 on it's way to me for a very good price. I notice a couple of people have mentioned changing the preamp but what is the main reason for this, mainly down to the lack of mid frequency control ?
Mostly because the stock preamp is so-so at best and the East one is a brilliant piece of kit that not only gives you mid-sweep mid-boost/cut but also complements the EMGs beautifully. Don't take my word for it, listen to the samples above - it's a no brainer. My Spector NS5 is the best bass I've ever played; it's a 2001 build and it's really nicely played in - not that a bass of this outrageously good quality needs much playing in. For me it's only a gnat's rizla better than Peter's redwood one (to my taste) but like Homer, I too dream of Peter getting bored with his so I can have the glory that is his Redwood NS5. If the boat comes in next year, I'm going to order one; an NS5 with a 4 headstock, oiled with black stain finish, EMG 40 P5 and EMG TW and a U-Retro + battery indicator. I get my head turned regularly (Bass Day was a classic example) but when I come home and plug in the glory that is like the 1st of the 9th + the 617th + Michele Mouton's Quattro S1 I realise that this is the daddy of all basses. The singer in my band only ever compliments my sound when I'm playing a Spector - she just hears and doesn't see what it is, she knows nothing about makes and models of bass, she just knows what sounds sexy and what sounds like a workaday bass. Shockwave Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Used to have a Spector Legend Classic 6 in Dark cherry flame maple. It looked the biz but i really hated the sound of the Spector tonepump pre-amp. Also something wasent quite right about the neck. Even after a decent setup it seemed like all the upper frets needed filing down. Quote
andyonbass Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I loved the tone of my euro 5, but found it a tad neck heavy and a real stretch to the low frets. Anyone else find this? Quote

The Goatreich Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I really want to try out a Spector Euro 5. I think they could potentially be the replacements for my Ibanez. They're the main axe of the person I look up to the most in the extreme metal bass playing world (Alex Webster) and I think that says a lot for them and what I'm trying to achieve. Any good stockists in the South Wales area that anyone know of? Quote

It has an EMG 40DC in the neck position and an EMG 40J at the bridge and a U-Retro preamp. Quote
The Goatreich Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Cheers Sean, I'll very likely be Christmas shopping *shudder* on Saturday so unable to make it but I really appreciate the offer. Maybe I'll pop into Crane's to see if they stock Spectors. Quote
Golchen Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 If I wasn't totally in love with my Fender jazz I'd definitely get a Spector. Tried an NS5 (I think?) it was totally awesome, but to much for the budget (even secondhand). Played a local Euro 5 several times and loved the feel of that as well. Quote

Just sayin'. Quote
TDM Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Fantastic basses. Although I've since sold the LX and the Rebop. Quote
