.... and why use two mics for bass and guitar when you can do both with one mic ?

(I wish I could find a link to the article where Gabe Roth talks in detail about his approach to recording)

See attached....[attachment=108156:sh*tty2.pdf]

Hmmm, attaching a pdf is proving to be a PIA!

[attachment=108158:Gabe_Roth_S_is_P_pt2.zip]

OK thats a zip file containing the Gabe Roth Pretty Is Sh***y Part 2 article. Best of luck, you may have to save it and rename it to a .zip then open it (wtf is the site up to?)

@'Roland Rock ,,,, good find, i have a huge funk, acid jazz and rare groove collection and never heard of the mighty imperials ! It reminds me alot of the Meters with that very open raw groove, this thred really is valuable and should be a sticky as a great funk archive.
In fact it should be a site, i would join...... Pete Academy ? its your baby.

Ok Histoy lesson, no fartng at the back please,..
Im going to throw in 1. in two parts.

1 iconic track you might not have heard of (but you have about 1000 times befor) by "the winstons" which changed and shaped modern dub/dance hiphop acid jazz/funk FOREVER.

please first watch the first youtube clip about it to the end, it really is an eye opener of how corporate greed can take your talent
and you would never have enough money to fight for it back.

worth a topic all by its self.

My pleasure mate :D

Betty Davis was an interesting 'character', worth diggin' around on the interweb for some biog, she was Miles Davis' wife, introduced him to Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix, shortly after which Miles went on down the route to Bitches Brew, she was also on the cover of Filles De Kilimanjaro. Waaaaayyyy ahead of her time wrt her openness about her sexuality and her explicit lyrics (very tame by todays standards, but back then - ouch she was just too hot!).

There are about 3 albums out and the one with that on is the best really, the next one didnt have the all star band, its still great, but not quite as great....

Eventually she became a full on recluse when she couldnt get a record released for love nor money.

Someone finally tracked her down a few years ago (by tracing tax returns of all things) and talked her into letting them re-release her 3 albums. She was oed several 10s of thousands of dollars in royalties at the time which hadn't been paid as she couldn't be found....

I had only ever heard Nasty Girl before finding this stuff out, and thats way more shouty, and not as good as Anti-Love Song for it.

Here's a little story about da funk.... I once interviewed Eddie Henderson (juzz fusion trumpet virtuoso and Headhunters associate) for my dissertation at college on Jazz Fusion. I asked him what influence he thought Sly and Jimi had on Miles? He said....'Man, it weren't about the music,...they were all funkin' each other!'

And while we're on subject of groove, here's my favourite rhythm section from The Headhunters

I reckon Paul Jackson and Mike Clarke are two fo the grooviest cats on the planet.

Any Fatback love out there? I really love their early/mid '70s stuff, not so much the later "I found Love" era:
