Yeah it was that very same gig! My mates band were supporting and actually did a coupla Lettuce tunes too. We're gonna do a couple more gigs before moving on to something else....
The Lettuce live in Tokyo album is amazing, they've taken all the old skool stuff that's been listed here and propelled it into the 21st century.

One of my all time favorite funk vids. I saw them at the Jazz Cafe in May, and MAN were they good. Got to meet the entire band afterwards...they just hung around!

I was at that gig - won tickets on the day & just turned up on my own - definitely one of my funkiest nights of the years. Skeet rules! Edited by Dad3353

Hi guys, what a great site you have here!

Just to say that a great groove is so many thing to different people, to me is generally something that makes me bob my head around when sitting in traffic, maybe I mean that certain something that drives a song along, makes me finger play my steering wheel, if you excuse the pun and even better when a bit oddball too!

for instance....
70's Marvin gay, got to give it up, and sooooooo very simple, but such a solid groove.

more modern stuff would something like E-Z Rollers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siG9PqvHg4s

Of course a lot of stuff from Jamiroquai like, Canned Heat, OK it's a bass station on the track but real fun and groovy to play on 4 string...or this guys Yamaha 5 string...is it me or has this guy got a distinct advantage by having fingers like eels?

Newer stuff that my kids would like such as

Just Jack Writers Block

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16fBF3Bgd3M

'n for that smooth oozing groove....

Air - La Femme D'Argent

enjoy.

How about some slower stuff from Angie Stone:

The original studio version is more fixed on the groove but I really like some of the bass & drum fills on this live cut :)

If you like this then search in Youtube for Angie Stone Amsterdam & you'll find more clips posted by her bass man - Jackie Clark

Great choices! The bass part on 'Wicki Wacki' is one of the most fiendishly catchy in history. Edited by Dad3353

I've been listening to Betty Davis solidly since I first spotted this!

Just found this nice little analysis of how to play it as well:

There's some great playing on the first album & the bass is just so well produced on some of the songs.

This is an 'extra' that didn't even make it on the original release!

I'm assuming it's Larry G on bass but Doug Rauch is also credited on the extended album.

Nice one mate!

Must bother to really learn Anti-Love Song. It certainly sounds like Larry on that one to me. Fantastic example of propery funky slap bass IMO. WHo says you need to play a bazzilion notes when you are slapping.

Glad I've 'hooked' someone else on Betty D too, was starting to feel lonely :)

I have to admit that I feel humbled by never having even heard of Betty D before!

I'm guessing most of the really funky stuff on that album must be Larry Graham. Doug Rauch was Sanatana's bass man but I've never thought of him as a slapper. Edited by Dad3353

The Crazy Penis track sounds like a sample version of this track by MFSB, one of my all-time faves:
