bubinga5
+1, great tone on that vid. Here's Queen Latifah's wonderful cover of my favourite Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band track, 'Hard Times' (one of my all-time favourite songs). It qualifies for this thread as it's a bit more groove-driven for this thread (though I might give in and post the original at some point!):
Jack, you have just hit the spot with that one.. i love that big time..!! what a beautiful woman she is too.
It's a cracker isn't it? I love the original moreso, it's got a strange, eerie romantic atmosphere to it (for me!) that just gets me every time. Here it is, if you're interested! Not quite so groovy, more 'lilty': http://youtu.be/-hPtFJ9LpFk

Must find out who played on that track. Not heard the rest of that album but I expect it's in a similar vein. Might try and hunt it down. I bought it when it first came out and revisit once a year maybe. Good shout! Edited January 7, 2012 by M-N-Y
M-N-Y
Check this out, gobsmackingly good. Rhythm section is insanely good, as is the production and the rest of the musicians. Not a big gospel fan but if this band was playing in my local church I'd be there every Sunday!!! Bass player is Lil Rodney Jones watch out for him! M-N-Y
One of my favourite players and songs. The main groove is played on a Frudua jazz bass and the solo on Jimmy's trusty Warwick Streamer. The main groove comes in at 1.40, simple but very effective especially when you consider there is no 'real' drummer on the track. M-N-Y
Sorry if this is a re post from earlier in the thread, please check out this track from the amazing Clyde Criner, with Marcus Miller on bass and Rodney Holmes on drums recorded in 1988. Davo-London
The Doug John's clip is grooving IMHO. However, the bass is master and the drums slave. So there is no real interplay within the groove other than the breaks. I play drums and bass and as a drummer often note that we (drum and bass) are playing together but not necessarily grooving! Little Feat is a great example of a band that simple oozes groove. Again the drummer is playing a very straight beat, maybe the band is simply very tight. Lovely feel to all their stuff. The Robert Palmer Track has a great feel to it as well and again the drums are pretty straight 2/4 beat so is it the bass that makes all the difference? Mwahahaha Davo
BigBeatNut
One of my favourite grooves ... I've been told that this is most likely the Meters doing the backing and so George Porter Jr. on bass. Wish I knew how to cop the bass sound on this too. Andy
Pete Academy
A sublime track from a later Chic album. Bernard's bassline is absolutely steaming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=036Tfy5f1VQ
Pete Academy
I've been listening to and playing funk for 40 years, but there are some tracks here that have blown my mind. The Angela Johnson and Maxwell tracks, not to mention the Pleasure ones. Bubinga is the Funkmeister!
chaypup
Loving this by The Brothers Johnson which no doubt has been posted some pages back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbxUtFDKz8k Rather annoying that it's in Gminor and the tape has been sped up so it sits somewhere between G and Ab though.... jackduran
I prefer the Joey Negro edit of this but the original is still great.
