Why thank you everyone! I've been watching this thread develop and have finally got around to plugging a decent set of headphones into my laptop so I can listen to all the clips. Excellent.

Personally, I like the slow grooving stuff. I especially liked the Me'Shell one that was posted early on.

I would like to add my own personal favourite, Millie Jackson.

To be honest, I think it is the whole band that makes this groove and drip with funk, especially as the bass player is playing it quite straight. I love it after the breakdown, after 3.45 ish.

Further examples of "my thing" are:

Freddie King

Ronnie McNeir

Aretha Franklin

Another example of the religious lot doing it well is this soundcheck by Tye Tribbett (brother Thaddeus "Terry" Tribbett on bass)

This is a great track and a perfect reminder of why Zender should be praised. That's the envelope filter sound I can never get.

I know Mr Zender is in the video, but didn't I once read somewhere that as this was the first track recorded, it was pre-Zender joining and done by Andrew Levy of the Brand New Heavies?

Of course I could be wrong...

That's amazing. Always meant to check out the Tribbett brothers stuff but never got round to it. Now I definately will.
Good choices with the other vids too, that EWF tune is a beezer.

Headhunters. As funky as it ever gets.

I particularly loved the Dupstaphunk track. Not come across them before but will check 'em out further.

I was going to post the original "Steppin' Out" track from George Howard (RIP) but this is a lovely live version of from '85.
This guy died way too young.

I'm not sure if that might be Keni Burke on bass. It was him, along with Nathan East, doing bass duties on the original "Steppin' Out" album.
(Album also has a beautiful version of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature").

Mmmm, ain't nuttin' sexier than a lady bass-player!! What's that bass the Taste of Honey chick is playing? Some kind of custom job? Looks like the b*stard son a Warwick Dolphin and a Vox!!

Molan - are you saying Lady Tee's coming to town again soon? I last saw her live at Hammersmith in 1990. Awesome gig - she made grown men cry, just her and a piano... Edited by Dad3353

I think it's a Tune Space Bass but I could be wrong!

She usually plays a sunburst Fender Jazz:

Lady Tee is coming to the Indigo 2 on Jan 30th!

I was there in 1990 - the Ivory tour:

Sound's a bit funny on this but she looks great!

Pax Stereo channel has almost a full rehearsal for the current tour: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=paxstereo#g/search Edited by Dad3353

Cool! Have to try and get me some tix!

Aah, "Ooh La La La" - t'was our first dance at our wedding!! No-one else knew the bl**dy song but we didn't care. Me n Mrs Captain Bassman have always been big Lady Tee fans.

She does look fab in that vid, in fact I think that was her hottest period for looks. I think she's been dodging a few salads in recent years though :) but the voice still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

Anyway, back on the subject of groove, so many of her songs - both early and later - have great bass parts. Thinking Naked to the World, Just Us Two, Portuguese Love, Square Biz... Edited by Dad3353

My favourite classic Kool tracks before they went all pop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK6vNwNEtu4 The drum part to Funky Stuff is amazing. Check how the bass drum plays behind the beat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBGTu8Z84qs This track is a masterclass of funk.
