Happy Jack Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 That popping video bears the same relationship to bass playing as a keepy-uppy expert bears to a Premiership footballer. It's a clever trick and I'm sure he's worked hard to get that far, but it's completely pointless. Quote

(i'm usless with words ) Quote
thisnameistaken Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 I thought it was... really good, actually! Rhythmically it was nuts, tonnes of imagination there. I wouldn't want to listen to him do it for a whole set, but that is some funky playing.
get that guy a drum kit
Werd. Commando Jack Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Hmmm... Seemed to slip a few bpm out in places.... /jk I am quite jealous! To everyone saying this is pointless, I view these types of videos as "here look what you can do if you extrapolate these exercises out as far as humanly possible". I reckon if I could do that, I'd be able to play any real music (granted this isn't real music ). Quote
Bassassin Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Nah. That first example was just awful, showboating, look-at-me-mum stunt bass, with all the musicality of rattling a stick along some railings. Which oddly enough is exactly what it sounded like. The other two links - Tetsuo Sakurai & Gustavo Dalfarra - are in another league altogether as far as solo bass is concerned. Dalfarra particularly is a brilliant example of how it's possible to combine excellent technical dexterity with good composition - and good taste - and be musical, captivating and entertaining. Jon.
