Thanks Andy. Yes, an AB session would be good as I've always loved Rob's basses. Drop me a PM when the snow clears?
Can I come too? I'd love a look at your Deep 5 Andy – never seen one in the flesh. I'll bring the Veillette acoustic bass.

Phil

PS. I'll try and get a few pictures of it up in the next day or so.

Yes those are the ones. I played Phil's when I picked up the Archtop, and it was truly lovely.

Yes Andy, one of those. Mine is a fretless 4 with ebony neck and bridge, spruce top, and koa back and sides, all made to look a bit mysterious and moody by a transparent smoke tint. I'll put some pics up when I get around to it (although I'm a useless photographer and unlikely to do the instrument justice).

You could always pop down to Brighton and have a go on it.

Looks like the folks at Veillette have beaten you to it Phil!
I have to say the pictures really don't do it justice. It's absolutely stunning in person, and the "smokeburst" really works against the koa.
Not bad pics though Gareth. Better than I would have done anyway. I suspect the smoke over koa look is one of those that will never really look quite as good in photos as it does in the flesh.

While my Archtop fretless continues to thrill and amaze me, I am delighted to say it will soon be joined by a sibling at the end of May!

This is where it has got to in the build process so far:

The spec:

Poplar body with curved radius top

Fretted 5 string maple neck with pau ferro fingerboard, side dots only

Citron pickups

"Monorail" type bridge

Aguilar OBP2 preamp – four knob setup of volume, blend, passive treble cut, and boost/cut bass

Tobacco sunburst gloss finish

Black hardware throughout, including Dunlop strap locks
Can't wait!

Cheers

Gareth

I'm very pleased to say my bass is featured on the Veillette website.

A quick update...

I’m loving the bass. I thought the guys had done an amazing job with my Archtop, and the Alpha just confirms that the bar is kept very high by Joe and the team. The fit and finish is just superb, the attention to detail absolutely perfect. I’ve never had instruments that are just so playable, and just feel so right, and how on earth they manage to balance the basses so well is beyond me (this bass, at just over 9lb, is nearly a lb heavier than my Archtop)! I love how they look so traditional on one hand, and yet totally modern on the other, and I've never had so many people come up and ask about my basses at a gig before.

The Citron pickups and Aguilar preamp are a perfect match. Both pickups have a wonderful voice; the neck pickup with a hint of extra bass and not much treble does a lovely P bass thump, while the bridge pickup has terrific bite and presence. Running it through my Demeter preamp revealed some real power and authority to the bass, and at rehearsal last night the bass was very even all over the neck, and it sat in the band mix perfectly.

Finally, I'd like to thank Phil Ward for being such an effective intermediary, and for putting up with my constant emails! I really appreciate the time he took answering all my questions, however minor, and Joe Veillette has definitely got himself a good UK rep!

I've played many bespoke makes over the years, but I really do feel these basses are the ultimate for me.

Cheers

Gareth
