Badass
Hi all I am sure we are all aware of Jaco, Marcus, Sheehan, Stanley etc etc...But I am looking for new material to learn from lesser known players, who have produced some great basslines. Been playing many years and know of many great player / lines, but always on the lookout for new stuff. A recent addition was the Bass player from the Robben Ford band, Travis Carlton, son of Larry. When i heard him playing I was amazed i'd not heard of him before. Great feel and timing. Anyone have other 'great finds'

Raggy
Bruce Thomas has come up with some great basslines
iconic
If ya bored try this Aurra track by Mark Adams....I'm pretty sure it's Mark Adams not Buddy Henderson or Steve Washington himself, although things changed a lot with Slave/Aurra and I see that one comment has the bassline down to Washington, but I will opt for Mark Adams? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl4WcPqtVG4 Edit:- ohh, hang on found the LP credits.....it has Steve Washington mentioned but no Mark Adams! In that case Andy Rourke of Smiths....say Bigmouth Strikes again, maybe not known too well for the bassline, but great fun to play! Conan
Fish (the ex-Marillion singer) always surrounds himself with great musicians, and his bass players are no exception. Some of the fretless playing on his 1989 first solo album is fantastic. It features ex-Simple Mind John Giblin - an extremely tasteful player who has also played with John Martyn (try his Grace and Danger album). Next bassist after Giblin left was David (or Davie) Paton. Another great player, but in a very varied style, he played with the band until 1997 when Ewen Vernal (from Deacon Blue) took over for one album (Sunsets on Empire). Then came Steve Vantsis for the next 10 years - a very tasteful but under-rated player. They are ALL worth a listen! In a completely different style, I would recommend you have a listen to Leigh Gorman's work with Bow Wow Wow. Incredibly dextrous and fast, if a little "guitarist"-like in style... Good call on Andy Rourke iconic! Edited December 19, 2009 by Conan

J3ster
I've always liked Mike Gordon of Phish.. For something different. Try the 'Picture of Nectar' from 92 Great album too Edited December 19, 2009 by J3ster
derrenleepoole
For something really different try some Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher. Some incredible bass solo pieces by him and a highly underrated player. I saw Ralf Gauck at Bass Day this year, and his solo bass interpretations of Beatles tunes was really original and refreshing. Certainly one to check out. Also Lawrence Cottle of the Gareth Williams Power Trio is a superb tasteful player as well.
