andy.
Im thinking about getting this Fender jazz i found in a shop. Its the best one I have played ever IMO, sounds amazing!!! The only problem is on the cosmetic side of things, its white and i dont really like white basses. Im wondering how much it would cost to get it re painted? And im guessing they would have to take the neck of to do this right? Is there anyway to get it re painted without taking it off? Thanks for any help
hillbilly deluxe
What's the problem with taking the neck off ? It's only 4 screws. If you want it done properly, the bass needs to be stripped of all components.
andy.
Im just concerned that it may effect the bass..... or am i just being stupid?
gnasher1993
No offence meant but, yes you are kind of. It won't affect the bass at all. If you were to have it repainted with the neck still attached there's a fair chance it may affect the neck. gnasher1993
It really depends who you go to. What sort of finish do you want? Just a flat colour? gnasher1993
Martin Sims would charge £235 I think. £325 if you want the white stripped beforehand.
OldGit
How old is it? There's many a 60's and 70's bass that was stripped and re painted, reducing it's value massively

Being the lazy, corner-cutting pikey I am, I'd think you could just key the original finish with sandpaper or wire wool & dispense with most - if not all - of the primer. I recommend Screwfix own brand black/white/clearcoat gloss spray - loads cheaper than Plastikote! Jon.

Cat Burrito
I've looked into refins too just recently (just plain block colours) and the standard cost seems to be around £300 which means you really have to want a different colour if you get a professional job done. The results I've seen are excellent though

What kind of punk rocker are you? 1200 grit sandpaper? 20 coats of primer? Joe Strummer must be turning in his grave (unless he was cremated!). bassbloke
My mate at www.insanarty.com will do the job for under £200. He refinished my two basses and they look stunning.
Protium
Save yourself a massive amount of hassle and just buy a black jazz IMO.
NancyJohnson
So how much do you think it would cost?
We have a paint/body shop about 100 yards from my office. When I was trying to put together a Thunderbird project, they simply asked me what colour I wanted ('black gloss') and said if I could supply the body rubbed down, they'd charge me a flat £50.00 to prime and spray it next time they had a black job in. Sweet. In this day and age, you don't need to pay hundreds. A bit of elbow grease plus time and patience works a treat. Phone some garages. waynepunkdude
If anyone cares I did this today, total cost £14. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=72147
Stu-khag
just a suggestion but maybe stick a black pick or different pick guard on it, I was never happy with the colour on mine until I changed that.
King Tut
Andy Viccars in Milton Keynes charged me £140 for a strip and nitro respray. Takes ages to dry but well worth it!
