pantherairsoft
Frigging Awesome. Thats the bassist from Miloopa. Love their album 'Unicode'. he and the drummer from Miloopa did a session at Bassday a few years back if I recall. He has some great ideas… but a pedal board even bigger than John Davis! Sibob
Love that last vid! Some amazing ideas and techniques! I'm getting into all this with my Dub-steppy Hiphop band, slightly limited funds (no double Mooger Froogers and Moog bass pedals for me)....but its fun anyway. I've found the best tool at my disposal so far is the OC-2 with no direct signal (obviously playing an octave higher than you normally would), some chorus on it, sounds very dub! I have 3 presets, but mostly use octave down with no original signal. Flavoured with soft chorus. That's the mainstaple of my sound.
Just reading back through the thread and saw this......couldn't agree with you more...as I've put above Si

My main sound is the OC2 with either EBS Unichorus OR my Guyatone Phase Shifter. I have been tempted by the Markbass Chorus/Flanger... But decided against it as it won't fit on my board! Lol. '77 jazz bass --> boss tuner --> boss OC2 --> passive DI for discreet sub channel at FOH --> zvex wooly mammoth fuzz (or maybe a crowther prunes and custard... the ol' brain box is a bit fuzzy) --> moogerfooger mf101 (with an ancient EMU expression pedal from my Emulator II) --> cheap ibanez synth wah pedal --> really really cheap ibanez 'soundtank' flanger (that i found in a rehearsal space) --> Line6 DL4 delay modeler --> DI --> WalterWoods amphead --> whatever speaker cabinet is around --> RE20 (or another good mic) That's a quote straight from John Davis, bassist of Nerve, 11/1/2008. oc2>mammoth>orbit>noisebox>bugcrusher>moog>fatman That was his touring rig from 16/7/2009 OC-2 (Output splits to the key in on the Fatman) into Zvex Mammoth into Copilot Orbit into Subdecay Noise Box into Bugcrusher into Moog LPF (with Expr and Robot Factory Exp Modulator) into Fatman into 201 into Boss RV3/5? That was Tayste over on Talkbass, accurately describing his board at Namm 09. I looked around for about 20 minutes, but I couldn't find an actual photo of the board at any point, which was irritating. He has a fantastic tone, and if you look for him on Talkbass (username: JohnDavisNYC) then you could probably get more info straight from him. fatgoogle
This thread is very interesting. Say i wanted to get some stuff to play Dub step and possibly play with a rather good(well i think he is anyway) i know. Things like borgore, rusko and more drum and bass type stuff. From what ive read here a octave up and down, flanger, maybe an auto wah. But i dont get Low filters or whatever they are. Do they just cut the high frequencies. What can you use for this. Whats the basic setup you can use for those real deep sounds. Thanks Sam H Edit: and a fuzz. Edited November 7, 2010 by fatgoogle
pantherairsoft
Octave down and chorus is a great start. Add fuzz for the synth sound. Bit of delay or reverb for atmospherics. That will do to get you started. Low pass filter is effectively a system that cuts the too frequencies, mixed with an envelope filter for a wah esque sounds... Effectively let's you do deep sub sweeps like a classic synth. Start with octave down... ... Then it'll all go wrong from there! There is so much you can achieve (I unleashed my sound on Phil.I.Stein the other day... As him!) but it's easy to get carried away! pantherairsoft
Cool Blog Dan, very informative… Here is a short sample from our Jam on Saturday, using the effect setup I currently have. This is all done on the strings with my effects pedals, no loops, sequencers or samples and no midi… It is missing a lot of bass from the recording, but was just a DI from the amp and its lost quite a bit (Drums sound rough too, this is done with just an overhead mic and was all improv')… Just an idea of the textures we are creating… I aim to re-record this soon but will mic up the cab for a fuller sound… Edited November 8, 2010 by pantherairsoft

Got any additions I should be including? Dan
There should be some mention of delay or reverb… there is almost always some form of slow decay or fade-out to a traditional synth sound. The tone ending as soon as the string stops vibrating often sounds very unnatural… I think its fair to say that many of us using similar setups use a fair bit of delay… Now you're going to point out the bit where you mentioned it and I over looked it aren't you! (Thanks for the mention on the Guyatone PS3 as well….) Edited November 25, 2010 by pantherairsoft

Dan
hi dan credit to you for another great blog m8 only additions i would make would be the mention of a few more iron ether products: oxide fuzz , cygnet tap tempo tremelo, and the soon to be released bubble chamber ( i believe nicknamed "the dubstep pedal") & tetravox octaver.. this guy is innovative, hes changing the game with his line of effects in my humble opinion... while you didnt want to mention any phasers id happily mention the moog mf103 which kinda opens up the CV can of worms... how foogers interact with each other (as you well know) is incredible, which kinda leads me onto controllers : MP201 & CP251 am i getting carried away??? pantherairsoft
Not carried away... Controllers are important! I use 3 foogers, controlled by an MP-201 and a single separate EP-2... The MP-201 gets used a lot for it's controllable LFO abilities (driving the FreqBox with different LFO's makes the pedal mental!)... I think external control units and life manipulation should be a whole blog post on it's own! With so much it can do. After weeks with it, I'm only using 2 of it's preset banks out of the 99 odd in there... Soooo versatile. My main bank of settings is - 3 channels with the FreqBox (Frequency by Expression, Waveform by Triangle LFO and Env' Amount by Saw Down LFO) and the 4th channel on my RingMod (Frequency by Expression). My Low Pass Filter has it's cutoff controlled by a separate EP-2. The combinations of sound from that bank of controls alone are endless!!!
