Jarhead
I was just thinking, the Yamaha Subkick is designed to pick up low frequencies, so why don't we use it for micing bass amps? Would it work well for this application because I have some speakers knocking about that aren't being used, and if it would work well then I'll build one. Has any of you recording engineers or anyone else tried this before? Zach

Although I haven't tried it on a bass cab I suspect that the frequency range and sensitivity is quite limited so might end up with rather an unbalanced sound if used on its own. It might be useful in capturing some air noise (if thats your thing) with another mic & a DI ? Let us know if you try this - I'd be interested to see what kind of sound you get. Doddy
Mike Gordon has been using a Yamaha Subkick to mike up his Eden/Meyer Sound rig on the current Phish tour. Jarhead
I think that I'm going to try this to capture the big lows in my new project then run that through the PA, to get some extremely thick bass. Anyone got a guide to making one? Zach
Gray
Have a look at this http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35920 I was told that the drivers used in the subkick are the ones out of NS10 studio monitors, but this could be a malicious slur on NS10's. Rimskidog
Yeah I have and do use a subkick on bass all the time (esp if I'm micing my fliptop as it happens.) Sounds great esp for that old school vibe.

Zach
The Yamaha one does use NS10 cones but you can use pretty much any speaker. The smaller the cone the less bass. The bigger the cone the less tight the bass is. 10 inch is a good compromise between the two. All you need to do is make a stand for it to hang on and wire it backwards. Job done. Jarhead
Cool, thanks mate. So if I use 10's I'll have a nice fat sound with loads of bass? Love your refurb thread BTW. Zach

Try not to get something with too rigid a cone (like a hartke or something). Just a sensible 10 inch middle of the road speaker cone from a guitar cab will be fine. Keep watching the refurb. Much more to come! Am just too busy to do anything at the moment! Edit: I see you are in Derby. Drop by some time and I'll show you around the place. I may well take you up on that, if you don't mind me bringing a mate who's really into the whole recording/tech side of music, he's the guitarist/DJ in my new DnB/Dubstep, and really likes seeing and talking about the whole technical side of things. man_at_arms84
I've used Subkick to record bass for my band a couple years ago. And vocals. Definetly cool.....
