Gaz Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Does anyone know of any basses that can produce a sound similar to a musicman stingrayish sound for say, under £200? My friend wants to buy a bass with this sort of sound but just doesnt have the money for a musicman. I've looked at Musicman OLP's and SUB's but i just want some cheaper alternatives as he's quite low on funds at the moment. Quote
OutToPlayJazz Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 The later OLP models (twin humbucker & active MM22/MM23) come very close, but apart from that the only thing I can think of is the Ibanez ATK300. Also, you can always look for a second hand MM SUB model. Quote

leschirons Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I have an OLP (first model) and it's instant Bernard Edwards. It cost me €100 Quote
gilmour Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Yamaha ATK basses cop the 'ray sound and are really affordable and playable. Quote
Grand Wazoo Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 You could get one of the Sterling by MusicMan which is a company that makes licensed copies of Stingray and Sterling and they have a very good review by the great Ed Friedland in the attached link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67Fo7AKwfA0 Quote

Lfalex v1.1 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 The last ATK I played was really good. £440 new, though. Second-hand may be a good proposition. That or the previously-mentioned S.U.B. Quote
KennysFord Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Nice tone on this video, anyone know what the backing track is ?? Quote

simon1964 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Another +1 for the Ibanez ATK. The ATK I owned was very close to my Stingray, and in some ways a bit more versatile (you can also get a passable Precision tone). Very nice basses for the money. Quote
Tone is pure Louis Johnson!! Especially on the slapped section at the start... A little bit dead-sounding though - could be the strings? Quote
Brave Sir Robin Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 He's got a couple more with the ATK, and also a stingray to do the comparison. Quote
ashevans09 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 (edited) If you're interested there's a second hand ATK, black/maple neck in one of my local stores for two hundred and something Edited January 5, 2010 by ashevans09 Quote
