So is it just me who thinks that it is basically a basket case that is going to be a shed load of grief to put right, which at the end of the project will still not be worth the intimated values the seller seems to indicate?

Well, it's what we in the business call auto-defretting. It's rare but one sometimes comes across it, especially on a loft bass as rare as this one. Although I'd agree that in excess of four pieces is uncommon.
