OutToPlayJazz Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 One of the guys on the EBMM forum or TB has one in a lovely olive gold sparkle. That's a special looking bass. Quote

Al Heeley Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Is that the Big Al? Sorry but I think they've managed to make a bass even uglier than the Bongo, and that's quite an achievement. Not a fan of the deliberately forced retro lines, looks like something out of an american 1960's kids cartoon. Loadsa buttons though! Quote

Dom in Dorset Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) Reminds me of stuff here: http://www.junkguitars.com/pictures.html Thumbs down from me, uglier than a bongo - too right. I knew I'd seen it before: Edited January 9, 2010 by Dom in Somerset Quote
kets Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 It's a bit too weird looking for me, I actually quite like the Bongo though... Quote
Duarte Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 Yes, the Bongo is beautiful - I have another one on the way. Then I plan on getting one of these single H Big Al's - I prefer the idea of these to the 3 single coil ones. But I think they look great, it's not as if it's the pointiest bass ever made, just a cool funky shape... Quote
Balcro Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Err, no! Scratchplate courtesy of The Sky at Night & Patrick Moore. About as attractive as the average headlight on a modern car. Balcro. Quote
Bassman68 Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Yuck, just my oppinion, looks a bit like the guitar Alvin lee plays (AXIS i think?) Don't much care for Bongo's either altho i like how they sound. What is Mr Ball trying to do with the company? All these odd basses & special editions? The company was founded on the Stingray etc. & how many of those are still around? Just as Fender have stuck with various P & J basses & their variants, 'If it ain't broke don't fix it'! (IMO) Quote
LawrenceH Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Each to their own, but the body and scratchplate look like they were cut out by a five-year-old using special child-friendly plastic scissors. Fine if that's your look though. Quote

rjb Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 The body and the MM headstock clash very badly on this. Not a fan. Quote
silverfoxnik Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Don't mind the look actually, but it's seems more of a guitar shape than a bass to me. What do they sound like - anyone heard one? Quote
Doddy Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010
Yuck, just my oppinion, looks a bit like the guitar Alvin lee plays (AXIS i think?)
Albert Lee plays the 'Albert Lee' signature model -and the 'Big Al' is a bass version of the guitar-hence the similarities. TRadford Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 In school many years ago, for our Desgin and Tech GSCE, we had to design and build something. My mate chose a guitar, and in full honesty, it was not far off of that. He got a E Go figure.. Yuk! Quote
Machines Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I think it looks funky. Fair play to EBMM for expanding their range, I think they're bored of just creating a new LTD ED colour every year. Quote
Duarte Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 ALso, I reckon (although having never played one) opinions will start changing after people hear it and feel it - like people dismissed the Bongo at first. Maybe this will be one of those ones that everyone hates the look of (and I can't understand why - it just doesn't look like a fender I suppose...) but when they play it they go "ooooh"...maybe. Paul S Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) Eyes of the beholder etc but I think that retro look is class! The lines of the scratch plate are just right. Far better, IMO, than those scrolly bits of hardwood with horns all over the place that a lot of folks favour. Edited January 10, 2010 by Paul S Quote
aznbass Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I think it looks pretty cool!, If i had one i would use it, but i wouldnt actually buy it. ? Quote
Dom in Dorset Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Not bad for a gcse woodwork project. Quote
