Sibob
Just looking at a JV Precision for a mate The serial number is seemingly (according to the owner) JV + 3 digits Has anyone heard of this? I've only ever seen JV+5 as the standard! Cheers Si
basshead56
Hmm. Always thought the JV was 5 digits. Isn´t the SQ series 3 digit? Unless the seller is refusing to give the last two digits (lots of people tend to do that to stop people cloning serial numbers online for chinese knock-offs)? Sibob
Possibly! To be fair, I'm still awaiting a picture of the neck plate! I've looked at some early JV serials and they are, for example: JV00330 So it could be that the owner is just omitting the first two zero's for whatever reason! Will report back! Rayman
Yeah I understand JV's had 5 figure numbers, never heard of a 3.
Kev
don't quote me, but i think a jv serial starting jv00... would be one of the ones that said fender, rather than squier.... Probably best if you could give us a link to look at it??
62P-Bass
Here's a pic of mine. Definitely 5 numbers! Andrew P.S. Sibob- will pass it on to Trokey.
Sibob
Cheers Andy Me and Dave have been investigating it all day! We've sussed it though, it's JV + 5 digits proven by a photo, no idea why she only quoted 3 of the numbers to start with. I did see that one starting JV00xxx was quite early, as it happens, this one is JV4xxxx, placing it Mar-May '83. But yeah, we're going to see it (and hopefully purchase it) on Wednesday, I'll force him to post pics when and if he has it! Cheers all Si

Is there a good source for dating info on the web?
Sibob
Yes mate, check out the 21frets.com website! Si
Alfie
I don't suppose anyone knows any dating information about Squier SQs. For example, roughly which serial numbers are 1983 and which are 1984. Also this JV has been on various classifieds for a while http://www.gumtree.com/london/82/52680382.html. Its price has been steadily decreasing, is it kosher?

And £400 really isn't a lot for a JV these days, if that one's on the level. If it was local to me my inner Gyppo would be onto that for scurrilous profiteering. J.
