jontywisp
I've given up on old-school heavy valve amps, and now use clear-sounding modern heads, like EBS TD650 and markbass LM-II. while these sound fine with modern basses and roundwounds, the new amps tend to sound a bit thin and sterile for my 70s P-bass with La Bella flats so what's the best pedal to put in front of the new digital amps, to add some tube-like warm fatness? (think Duck Dunn's Stax sound). I'm guessing this might be a common question, but can't find the relevant thread Some options I'm thinking of are the Sansamp DI box with drive function; or EBS valvedrive; or the newer Sansamp VT - so how do these compare for my particular purpose? I'm not looking for major distortion and nasties, just for warm fatness a la Stax bass sound thanks for any advice
umph
have you tried out a black finger? warm sounding valve compression.
gnasher1993
Sansamp VT bass. You might want to wait for the newer version to come out.

harvey1-8
Catalinbread STF is worth checking out
dannybuoy
+1 on the SFT. I have a VT Bass, and the SFT trumps it for old school motown / funk tones using a P-Bass and flats (the VT wins for grind with roundwounds though). I've owned an EBS Valvedrive and DHA VT1 before also, they would all do a fine job (EBS sounds more old skool between the 2).
Rumple
Just been playing with my VT-1 and it gives a great gritty valve tone but judging by that YouTube video the SFT does that old school Ampeg thud better. R.

alhbass
[quote name='jontywisp' date='Jan 9 2010, 08:16 PM' post='707004'] I'm not looking for major distortion and nasties, just for warm fatness a la Stax bass sound I use a SansAmp BassDriver DI in front of my Markbass LMK when I want an old school sound (I'm playing a P-bass with Rotosound Tru-bass nylon flats) - it does a great job I think. And it'll deliver fearsome crunch and grit if you ever decide you want that too. But for simple, old school warmth it's ideal.
