Clarky
Although I am in general not in favour of fretboard pyrotechnics, I do enjoy the occasional bass solo. Which one(s) are the most well executed, cleverly constructed and beautiful to your ears? I am guessing there will be plenty of votes for Willy Week's 'Voices Inside' from the Donny Hathaway live album, Jaco's "A remark you made" and "Havona" and from the punk contingent (Wayne!) Rancid's "Maxwell Murder" I will throw in a left-field one - the gorgeous double bass solo on "Topplue, Votter and Skjerf" by Miroslav Vitous on Terje Rypdal's album "To be Continued". Here is a link to a free (slightly lower quality than MP3) version, the solo is at 1:27. Just click on "Prelisten Track" http://ligamusic.com/Lyrics/2943917/Terje_...f/download-mp3/ Edited January 17, 2010 by Clarky

Pete Academy
Victor Wooten's 'Palmystery' album, 3.19 into the track 'Victa'. Melodic perfection (and no double-thumbing!). Edited January 17, 2010 by Pete Academy

Melodic perfection (and no double-thumbing!).
Another vote for the Victa here. My personal favourite is the track, "The Lesson" (no.4 from Palmystery), clearly giving us a lesson in line deveopment. Love the flamenco feel as well. 1. Pete, how many people are going to say this is unmusical & fret w***ing?! 2. We'll just give them 20p so they can go & ring someone who gives a ****! Conan
Just thought of another one....! Byron Miller on a George Duke track. I forget the name at the moment, but its on the album with "Omi (fresh water)" on it. Will look it up in a moment... Tha fonk! OK - it's the track "Reach for it" from the album of the same name. samkeen
Sorry to be so samey but my vote's got to go to Vic too. So many amazing solos... I just stumbled upon this little gem yesterday, a great little solo on The Beatles' Yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcXI74PaI2w...feature=related
phil.i.stein
it'd have to be one of les claypool's freakouts for me. i like dissonance as much as melody. Tommy the Cat springs to mind, but there are plenty more, i'm going to have a quick listen to the 'of whales & woe' cd., and edit later. oh and of course, tom jenkinson's 'solo electric bass' stuff Edited January 17, 2010 by phil.i.stein

Well, IMO it's impossible not to like either of the suggested VW tracks, especially as melody is the key element.

Pete Academy
This is the live version of Sanborn's 'Run For Cover'. Marcus's fingerstyle intro and the slap solo in the middle are an amazing example of how the perfect solo should build. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J85oQSX-d6s BTW, the sound is very low. purpleblob
Okay my 2p's worth and I know people might question whether this is strictly a bass solo (as it's not played on a "standard" bass) but Stanley Clarke's School days pretty much changed my life musically - so I'll go for that. School Days is a staple one to learn as well.

Was thinking of this one as a memorable solo from my youth. For me it has to be Havona everytime for jaw dropping everythings (light and shade, fluidity, composition etc), with the Willie Weeks solo being equally jaw dropping but in a totally different way. EDIT- that Miller intro and solo aren't as good as the ones that made it onto the Straight From The Heart live album. I guess it was the same series of sessions/gigs. RIP Hiram Bullock- class.
