Just for future reference: Are you admitting to loving Kenny G, muscly men with mullets, or music to buy chinos to?
Yeah Carles is great - as are the rest of that band. Saw them about 4 or 5 years ago at the Barbican I think. Really taken by his style.

To say I'm not impressed by the technical ability of Marcus's solo here would be a lie. It's just that I'm so inspired by the fashion that everything else takes a back seat.

Since first watching this video my wardrobe has gradually seen an influx of saggy wifebeaters and massive trackie bottoms. Also, whenever I'm on a gig with an alto sax player, quite without realising it I often end up next to him doing the same weird grooving leg dance during his solo.
LOL

I was thinking of going for a style that encompasses the two greats in those videos (Carles & Marcus)...

So if I had the long hair, grey beard with the wife beater, joggers & porkpie hat Do you think it would improve my playing???! :)

B

PS very jealous you caught that Chick Corea gig!

I think your playing would improve exponentially with each item of clothing.

Yeah it was a good gig! The sound was dodgy at times, but the musicianship was always top drawer. :)

Bit of an unfashionable one (Jeremy Clarkson likes them)- Martin Turners solos during Handy by Wishbone Ash, very musical solos that build up into pretty solid grooves.

This! I had a right job learning this when I played in a Wishbone Ash tribute band.

John Entwistle in My Generation. It's neat, tidy, short and to the point. It fits the number well and is still interesting when it finishes!

+1. nothing since then has been anything other than a fretw***.

edit: can't believe I'm not allowed to say "fretw@nk". we all do it, on our basses or on our cocks.

My favourite bass solo bits are Bigtime and the outro to Does it Really Happen by Yes
Yeah that bit in DIRH where it fades out and then comes back in with what sounds like a fairly improvised bit from Squire, very melodic. I've always had a soft spot for this one, from about 1:55 in from Glenn Cornick ;

There aren't any "best" bass solos, just interesting ones, but I've just discovered this on YouTube. Takes me back to when I bought the album.

For sheer ballsy, "****-the-twiddly-stuff-gung-ho-ness" - and for inspiring me to pick up a bass as a sweaty teenage metaller - I'd have to say one my faves is Cliff Burton's Anesthesia.

It's messy. It's not especially technical (albeit tricky enough for me!). And it probably sounds quite cliched nowadays. But damn, did it ever rock my world when I was an impressionable youth...! :) Can't really say that I'm a huge fan of Metallica these days, but Cliff was - and perhaps still is - one the best metal bassists of his generation, IMHO.

Agreed - I remember watching this on Cliff 'Em All and being gobsmacked, it was like nothing I had ever seen or heard before.

Just so cool even all these years later - I loved Cliff!

I've often thought punk music was so bad it must have been a big joke to a select few, laughing at everyone getting swept up in it. But good grief, this really shows how low punk would go. The time keeping in that solo was terrible. I know punk musicians generally pride themselves on not being able to play a tune to save their life because it 'f***s the system' but that was genuinely cringeworthy.

I kind of sort of have a slight hunch that that solo, lyrics, and everything else about that song may have just about been intended as a joke mate ;)
