yes to Willie Weeks and Stanley Clarke
both Voices Inside and School Days amazed me. Still do. Great music.

Prince - 2NigsUnited4WestCompton
Paul Chambers - Blues by 5
Marcus Miller - Legends Concert, on the fretless 6, nice.

always liked the Sade tune with the bass break in it, quite like some Joy Division but probably Perfect Kiss New Order video version for specific bass solo, Larry Graham Hair
Tacky eighties: there was a really really good bass solo on a 12" version of Freedom by Wham.
I remember a great bass solo on an extended remix of "I'm your man", isn't that the one you mean (with a great jazzbass-sound in a Stanley Clarke sort of style (Dean Estes, I presume ?)) ?

My favourite : Jaco's fretless solo's on "Refuge of the roads" (Joni Mitchell)
Flea's ditty on 'Aeroplane' needs a mention as it was a bonafide actual hit with a bass solo, allbeit shortened for the radio.
Nigel Harrison's solo on Blondie's 'Atomic' predates it by a good few years...

solo starts at about 2:30.

I love that solo too but I still have doubts that he really played it himself..
In a documentary producer Mike Chapman complained about the poor technical abilities of the musicians of Blondie (the drums for Heart of Glass had to be played one tom, snare, hi hat, etc.. at the time) and that it was really hard to work with and since this is such a difficult solo..?
I would love the thought though that he really played it himself.

The lad from Sleeper dod a great version of that bass break for the trainspotting soundtrack.

Also, it was just a mention for that solo, if we're putting them all in, why not 'My Generation' by the Who.

Love the 2 or 3 Danelectro's vs 1 Jazz Bass story on that one...

Another one I've got a particularly soft spot is the solo from 'We Don't Need This Fascist Groove Thang' by Heaven 17 - it takes me back just thinking about it. I think the bassist was given as 'John Wilson' and I've never come across him on anything else. Anyone out there able to give me some back story on this fella?

It actually sounds like someone vigorously twanging a ruler off the end of a desk at different lengths.
Not really a bass solo, more solo bass. This one does it for me.
that's quite humbling, so much talent it hurts, thanks for sharing that...I can't even slap my bass without all sorts of noises coming out the speaker that makes my cats ears pick up in pain...and you can pat your's and make it sound wonderful!

Love this!

Okay, one more from me, when I heard Jonas Hellborg play Little Wing on a 4 string bass I was mesmerised, basically to my mind this guy opened the door to do anything on bass, for me at least :) (not sure how to embed a youtube vid. so here's the link) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh_Z1kt5iR4

I have the good fortune to see him live a couple of times at the end of the 80's/early 90's and he was truly spellbinding. Not to everyone's taste including me at times, but a truly innovative musician.

If you don't like slap then please don't play the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-NSHWrHJlM and yes it's total bassturbation

EDIT:Been trying to find something with Jonas playing fretless as he has so much feeling - often not see due to his slap pyrotechnics - but this is nice (more solo bass than a bass solo as was Little Wing ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYV-MS5WzJ0

EDIT AGAIN: Sorry just realised I went a little Jonas mad in this post, so in for a penny in for a pound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WelduVCB03g...feature=related

Another +1 to Lemmy's solo in Motorhead's "Stay Clean". Funny enough, been working that one out over the last week or so.....Not as easy as it first sounds! :)

here are some more of my faves for bass solos;

Motorhead- Lost In the Ozone
The Who - My Generation
Metallica - Anasthesia/ Pulling Teeth
Flotsam and Jetsam - Doomsday For The Deciever
Primus - Tommy The Cat
