It's been a long time since I've seen so much tag-strip :)

This is nothing special but it's the guts of a bass combo so I guess it qualifies for this thread. One of the high-power resistors decided to start playing up and one of the PCB tracks had cracked, causing an intermittent fault. A little tricky to find but very easy to fix, so it lives on.

You know, it does irk me that with modern mass produced electronics you get easily breakable items that wear out (potentiometers) soldered directly to the PCB.

I know it's cheaper to manufacture, but dear god, it's just bad design wise.

How much money d'ya think Sound City are making from their amps that are still chugging along, or Hiwatt, or Burman? All none, worked themselves out of a job. Funny that the ones that headed towards a bit shoddy are still going.

Valve amps, love them, and have had (and have) my share of Hiwatt, SC, Marshall, Vox and homebrew. Well executed amps are things of elegance and beauty (to me anyway, am I sad?). I love the simplicity and ease of repair, which I can do myself most of the time. Downside is when repairs are not DIY or involve transformers. The moment repairs involve a skilled person who makes a fair living, then the effects of new technology start to have a bearing. Class D poweramps are now silly money (Peavey IPR 1600 £219),they can almost be treated as consumables if lasting 2 / 3 years. Think I am going handbuilt valve pre-amp, then class D poweramp. best of both worlds? Must get shot of my SC120, is very tidy and unmolested, just hisses :)

Molest some decent metal film resistors in and bunch of the hiss will go.

It is indeed. looks lovely doesn't it!

I think its the old Hiwatt syndrome; Built to last so it didn't break so nobody bought new ones..

Just got my SC200 roughly working. Needs switch wiring sorting becaus the light goes on when the standby is off, and the bias sorting, then tidy up the wiring.

Not a "guts image" as such, but if anyone's interested I can probably take (eventually) a pic of what was done to change two of the speaker outs into a slave out & DI level??

Would dig that. The outputs on this were wired weird so you had to have two cabs plugged in due to capability of destroying any single cab available from Sound City.

I know some of you have seen this on the other thread but I considered it would keep Mr F happy! :D
