peteb
I've been offered a Lakland 44-02 for, what must be said, a very low price However, there is a reason that it's so cheap - the owner has re-sprayed it and made a complete dog's breakfast of it, not just on the body of the bass but also the pick up covers! I'm guessing that he has just sprayed over the original finish, but as I haven't actually seen it so I'm not sure. I am a bit tempted but don't think that I could live with it in it's present state - any ideas for restoring it to it's former glories?? Jerry_B
Well, it shouldn't be too hard stripping off the paint, and getting new covers for the pups. The tricky part will be getting a respray for the body. 'Tricky' as in 'probably pricey'. Mind you, there may be some nice looking grain underneath... rjb
Laklands are made from good bits of wood. Should hopefully look something like this:- http://www.bassexchange.com/catalog/images...1_natural_1.jpg I'll bet you could sand that all off and wipe in an oil finish like on a Warwick. That's what I would do, anyway... As for the pup covers, you could try scotch-brite pads on those. The paint might come off very easily. Can anyone have an educated guess what he has used to spray it? Edited January 20, 2010 by peteb
KevB
Liquidised marrowfat peas. If you can find a pan big enough leave it simmering for 20 mins, will come off a treat.
Bassassin
This looks sufficiently amateurish that chances are he's just squirted that green crap (Halfords rattle can, I expect) on top of the original finish. If so, a bit of fine wire wool & very fine grade sandpaper will get the spray off, and T-cut & elbow grease will get the gloss back on the original finish, assuming it's poly. The pup covers will probably clean up in the same way. Jon.
erisu
It's heartbreaking looking at the pictures! A pretty bass with a shoddy paint job!
Golchen
I love doing up stuff like that! I'd buy it in a snap if the price was right.
