Jamesemt Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Just bought a Jap 62 ltd edition Precision, and would like to get a nice case for it. Are the tweed cases worth £130? What about the Tolex? Would prefer a Fender case as it would add to the special vibe of the bass... Quote
john_the_bass Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I've got a moulded case that I got with my Precision and it's shocking. It's the one with the moulded logo and not the red sticker one (I've got an old one with the red sticker for my strat which is actually very good) and it's falling to bits already. The lining - polystyrene and furry carpet is falling out and the two halves don't line up properly when you try and shut it. When it finally falls to bits, I will buy another Hiscox. If you want a tweed one, you'll probably find a copy for about 50 quid Quote
Sibob Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 My moulded logo fender case is great! Survived numerous gigs and tours and still lines up! But yeah, copy tweed cases can be ordered from most decent music shops for not much bunce! Si Quote
Johngh Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 +1 for Hiscox. I Have 2 and they are both brilliant. Another one will soon be on order. Quote
OutToPlayJazz Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I bought a molded shaped case with the embossed logo for my Geddy Lee signature. It's very tight & fits very well. Paid something like £109 from Thomann.de Highly recommended Quote

I prefer the Hiscox tho' Quote
PaulyB Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 My P bass came with a moulded case, it seems srutdy enough, trouble I find is the lack of space for other bits. I have to take the strap off which I know seems trivial but it's a bug bear with a locking strap, then you can only really get one lead in. Quote
Tinman Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 The moulded, logo'd one that came with my jazz is rubbish. The two halves don't match up which is pretty poor considering it's only 2 years old. Quote
KevB Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 My US Jazz came in an SKB molded case like this: http://www.dv247.com/invt/42256/ Seems pretty solid, not sure if they are available cheaper than this though. Quote

NJW Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 my fender moulded logo case has lasted 4 years now and is good as new. my hiscox case lasted about a year and fell apart. both did the same tours and shows in that year. however, the hiscox provides a lot more protection (when its in one piece). Deep Thought Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I'm on the second moulded one after the one which came with my P was sent back to Fender-it was crap. One of the catches wasn't even put on straight-and not just a bit wonky, I mean very wonky, the padding kept popping out and, the two halves didn't line up so it was a pain to shut. My local shop were very good and pestered the Fender rep for months until they finally got me a new one. The new one is better but when it dies it's a Hiscox for me too. Quote
thumbo Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Hiscox cases are stronger than the Fender ones. I've compared both brands' cases side by side and just pushing down on the top of the cases alone there's a big noticable difference in how they flex. You can stand on the hiscox cases and they'll only bow slightly... i wouldn't dare stand on a fender case. Quote
Buzz Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 The Warwick Rockbass branded hardcases are also not bad, mines pretty sturdy. Quote

They should have replaced that surely? Quote
NJW Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I couldnt have mine replaced because one of the latches has been tampered with by US Customs (they assumed the case was locked and so tried to cut it open, before realising it was unlocked afterall). This isn't what caused the damage to the case, but apparently i couldnt claim for a replacement as a result of the cutter marks on the metal. Quote
LukeFRC Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 i have a status branded hiscox. its great. its only downfall is that it is 4inches too short to take my fender P aswell as my status Quote
Sibob Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Well i like my Fender Case lol I also have have a MusicMan style SKB case that i got from Eubassix! Great case, super sturdy, plenty of room for peripherals. Si Quote
aido43 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Hiscox are the best--ive a Manson branded one for a Warwick I have and its built like a tank--agree with above that shaped Fender P case is crap--the catches never line up when closing and theyre poorly lined. Quote
paul, the Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Unless Fender cases' quality matches their prices I wouldn't go Fender. The only positive attribute is resale value, which is defeatist imo. Go with a respectable alternative that justifies its price. Quote
Muppet Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 The older Fender ABS cases were great. Oblong and tough, like the Musicman and Ricky cases. Then they changed to the guitar shaped cases which are of much thinner more fragile plastic and are completely rubbish. I sell mine for lots and buy a Hiscox for much cheaper and am quids in. I have had three Fender cases get splits in the plastic on flights but never have had any such problems with a Hiscox. Guess it depends on whether you want protection or whether you need the origial logo'd hardcase. Steve Quote
Guest Bald Eagle Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 They come free with the bass, so better than nowt? I wouldn't buy one on it's own though. I'd use a bag with a zip and a pocket for your stuff. Everything wears after time so it's not really worth considering, oh unless it's vintage then wear is good, apparently. Quote
Hutton Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 The new Fender moulded cases certainly aren't as good as the old oblong ones. I believe they're made in China, so enough said. I keep a Musicman Sub in a Hiscox and have to say that it is a great quality British built case. The Hiscox guys are very helpful and provided me with a couple of pads to take up the slack in my case as the SUB had slight movement. At the moment I'm looking for a period moulded Fender oblong case for my 1983 P-Bass. If anyone knows where I might get one let me know. Quote
