bubinga5
There is endless electric bass in music we all like, but what really blows you away...can you play it? or do you just listen and admire/learn... i always like to see other people's choices because i learn so much about other stuff...so lets see em these i just love.. i saw Julian play this live on his F Bass that was on BC for sale a while ago...i dont usually like too much flash but this is different...very special this song is to me.........just INCREDIBLE composition.!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YMkI4uc6PU 2 more Incognito tunes..this is the intro to Beneath the Surface and the tune after is supreme with Chris Balin on vocals...2 of my favorite cog tunes, first time i heard these i knew what i liked in bass...IMO Randy plays the perfect balance of groove and harmonic intuition...for these reasons, i think hes one of the best in the world... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YMkI4uc6PU this is one of first funk songs my mum ever played to me back in 1983...the brass and bass intro stuck with me for a long long time, where id he get his groove from???......i had no idea at the time of who was behind it...absolutely love it...bass playing is ok too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWh8HzCxtOg...=PL&index=6 i fxxxxn love this song...lovely relaxed playing, with some great funky fills...for me there is nothing quite like her touch and jazz bass tone...her best album IMHO.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OBM2FU9HOo hope you enjoyed my selections cause i did.. phil.i.stein
Primus - Tommy the Cat - say no more. Squarepusher - come on my selector - twisted genius. MDC - Guns for Nicaragua - nothing complicated, just a nice line Nomeansno - Big Dick - bass and drums are sometimes the only necessary vehicles for a tune.. Golchen
Stu Hamm: country music - predictable but I love it! Jeff Berlin: Bach - Beautiful fluid fingerstyle Mel Schacher (Grand Funk Railroad): I come tumblin - I used to love this band, and not many people stuck a bass solo in a rock track back in 71 Billy Sheehan: the whole Eat em and smile album - best rock bass ever for me! Note: vids not great, you need to hear the originals really!
Conan
Thanks for posting the Julian Crampton stuff. When i was (much) younger I was massively into jazz-funk and loved Incognito, but I never knew who the bassist was. What a player! Cheers! 4-string-thing
Fairport Conventions "Tam Lin" Ashley Hutchings is vastly underrated, but his fluid lines on this always blow me away. Danny Thompson on "Cooksferry Queen" By Richard Thompson, what can you say about Danny, except pure class! Dave Pegg, on Fairports "Dirty Linen" And just to prove that I don't just listen to folk-rock..... Greg Lake on King Crimsons "21st Century schizoid man" Perhaps I should buy some modern records now? the_skezz
Stranglers - Nice n Sleazy (Nice leading bass line, gives a really gritty feel to the song) The Who - My Generation (Not just the solo, but he puts in a fair few variations on the bassline through the song...really shows his mastery of the instrument IMO) Tool - Schism (Great riff, really sticks with you) Spinal Tap -Big Bottom (Cos it's friggin Spinal Tap)
chardbass
I'm going to go for the pop angle- I've mentioned it before on here but Kylie's Spinning Around has always been a big favourite of mine. It completely captures the Bernard Edwards vibe and isn't an easy line to reproduce feel-wise. Other faves back in the day that inspired me to sit up and listen were Duran Duran's Rio and the original bassline from the Fame theme (got me hooked from the first note) All 3 of the above are ALL about the bassline for me. deathpanda
This... I have been listening to it unhealthily over the past year or so, the bass is just... perfect. The other 3 would have to be: King Crimson - 21st century schizoid man Pink Floyd - Young Lust (I only started really appreciating Roger Water's bass work when I had to learn this song in my band, man... the bass track is fu*king brilliant) Jaco - Portrait of Tracy (especially his live versions, where he'd just go into one and make you forget that you're moving forward in time)
