I think some of the early Hondos were aluminium-neck though. My Duke is for sale if anyone wants it Edited August 14, 2012 by alyctes Quote

karlfer Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Guys, anybody know anything about Yamaha SB-30 basses. There is an absolutely gorgeous looking one for sale relatively close to me and he's asking for offers. I don't know if they go for £100 or £1000, can find bugger all on T'interweb, Found Yamaha catalogues back to 1980 but this series appears to have been long gone by then. He says its 1973, original case and it looks in great nick. It just looks so different and nicey. Any help/advice greatly accepted, cheers, Karl. Quote
It probably won't be of much help, but according to the yamaha website it was sold in the 70s for some 40k yen - also, it's got 20 frets and is surely some sort of short scale. It appears to have two bigger (and more expensive) brothers - SB50 and SB70 - so I would say this is the entry level model. In any case, these bloody things are so rare they have got to be collectible Edited August 19, 2012 by setekh Quote
noelk27 Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 The SB30 was the single pickup version. The SB50 was the two pickup version. Modelled along the lines of Gibson Les Paul basses. These were only in production for a short time, between '72 and '74. The 30 went out of production at some point in late '73. Not played a 30, but the 50's I've had my hands on have not been good basses - heavy bodies (even though one had half its back hollowed out for electrics), narrow touchboard/deep neck, and muddy, unfocused pickups. Can't recall what the last one up for sale here went for, but in Japan sell for Y30,000 to Y50,000. Quote
