Nah, that one's a snip. Check out this one :)

I received a very odd reply from the seller when I asked how they could justify $3500 for it.

"It's on earth that this guitar is."

First of all imagine that intergalactic postal charges are fairly steep, then say it like Yoda. It makes far more sense.

I might have a punt on this. Is it just me or does the nut look poorly glued in?

There was a feller on here selling one for £50 a week or two ago - might be worth asking if he's still got it:

No question about the body material on that one, either. BTW these pickups are actually odd-looking single-coils, not 'buckers, despite the twin row of pole pieces. I bought one for a project, it puts out 11k which is pretty hefty for a single coil.

I've got the matching 6 string already and to make matters worse it went for less than I was prepared to pay :)

It's the extra pickup cover, isn't it? Turns an ugly bass into a true monstrosity. Not so much "so bad it's good" as "so bad it's really bad".

That's probably not too far from the ballpark for an Ibby Musician, unless you get lucky. The early 80 originals - Musician, Studio & Artist ranges - were high-end & can fetch some pretty silly money, particularly the Artists.

With this one you also have to factor in the fact it's in Japan & will cost six thousand quid to post.

Absolutely stunning instruments, if it's anything like my 6 string version it'll sustain for days too.
Despite what people think plexiglass produces a good tone (infact because there's no imperfections like wood the vibrations are better)

This would seem to be the perfect place to ask about any info/history on my Japanese made Profile bass.

It's a Silhouette model P-Bass copy bought in '88 second hand.

Google searches haven't really provided much info, I think Profile made various copies of Fender basses & guitars for the European/Australian market (maybe branded as something else for US Market?) in the early to mid 80's. At some stage I think production was switched to Korea.

Any info appreciated :) .

Thanks.

I've seen a couple of Profiles go through Ebay, sold OK-ish on the "MIJ-Ibanez-Lawsuit" pitch. There really seems to be very little out there about these, & my tattered Guru's Guitar Guide just tells us they were good-quality Japanese copies, produced between 1984 - 86. It also gives a guide price of £100 - £150, if it still happens to be 1990 where you are. :)

I would expect, like most brands Profile's an importer's name, meaning it's anyone's guess who actually made them. Seems the brand wasn't around for long, unsurprising since they missed the whole "copy era" by a decade, & in the mid-80s would have found themselves competing with established Japanese replica-ists like Tokai & Fernandes. That & the fact that people back then had an annoying tendency to want to play new & contemporary designs, rather than what were seen as superannuated 60s & 70s relics.

How times change...

Thanks for the info Jon.

It's always perplexed me why I've never been able to find out much about it, but if they were only produced over a couple of years that would help explain it.

It does seem (to me anyway) to be a pretty well made instrument.
