Bit alarmed at the idea that to de-fret it rather than removing the frets & filling the slots, he prised the old fretboard off & replaced it with a mahogany one. Not a material commonly used for fretless boards, this and the general tone of his ad don't give me a lot of confidence that he knows a great deal about basses. String separator? J. Still overpriced at £350 in its current condition. It's a boring, run of the mill, Oak finished 700. Now, the Black 700 that was listed at the weekend should have caught your attention. Black was a standard finish, but produced in small numbers when compared to the Oak and Walnut versions, and pre-81 examples in that finish come up relatively infrequently. The one I played a few years back looked suspiciously like Larch or Pitch Pine. Co-incidentally, the State Tree of North Carolina is Pinus palustris (Longleaf Pine). Swamp Ash usually gets labelled as such, as we expect to see that as a tonewood; but pine needs a bit of er... marketing. P.
