This is an interesting looking instrument. I certainly don't feel tempted to buy it as due to its age, it's not from the classic Japanese instruments era (I would guess) and there appear to be structural problems. But it's the kind of thing that interesting to see.

This claims to be a Japanese p-bass. No name on headstock, but it might be an Ibanez it says. Or of course, it might not be.

WARNING: NOT A BASS!!!!

But surely £150 for a MIJ N-Series Squier strat wtih a case. Isn't this a bargain for someone? Barwell is inconvenient for me to get to, and I'm not well this weekend. I have a weird desire to acquire this bass [b]NOT[/b] because of it's alleged provenance, just 'cause it looks like a bit of fun to do up. Any thoughts from the experts on the Antorianess and potential of it please?

The headstock looks odd. I don't know what age of Antoria that came from, but I searched on Antoria basses, and couldn't find anything with a headstock that looks like that. The ebay listing says it's an 'Ibanez', but is it really?

(As an aside, the modern Antoria brand owner has an IMHO [url="http://antoriaguitars.com/"]quite nice website[/url] but the instruments look to be the same copies that a lot of brands sell).

A mate of mine has an antoria telecaster with that headstock, it is utterly lovely.

It's an 80s model. Other than that some Antoria models were built by FujiGen, it's got f*ck all connection with Hoshino.

Yesterday i started new topic ' Made in Japan' badged jazz bass copy in order to identify a jazz bass copy
I bought recently from a pawnshop.
Then i came across this topic which I think is the right place to put a link with pics in.
If anybody knows what is it pls let me know

My guess is that it's a Matsumoku made bass. The three piece quarter sawn neck was a characteristic of Mat instruments, and it's very similar to the Aria 1540 which was made by Mat. The thing that's throwing me off is the neckplate - Matsumoku usually put 'Steel Reinforced Neck' or 'Steel Adjustable Neck' on their early 70's basses, though perhaps someone will know if they used Made in Japan stamps at any point? Noelk27 on these boards is well up on old Arias.

Realistically though, you'll never know the brand of this bass without the name on the headstock. Many factories produced identical instruments and badged them up with whatever name the importer requested, which means the closest you'll get is an ID on the manufacturer.

Fantastic condition bass for it's age though. :)

Looks like it may be a Grant. They were imported by a music shop in Edinburgh, called Grants, from Japan back in the late 70's early 80's. Here's some photos of one for sale on preloved. Tuners are the same as a Maya but the Maya headstocks are more fendery

Edit: Cardinal Series Bass, should be MIJ @ Matsumoku I believe. Is Flat Eric around, he has (or has had) some and will be able to recognise the model and be able to comment on the price.

Musky - don't think it's a Mat - the body's ply and all the Mat J copies I can remember had veneered butcher-block or solid timber bodies. Apart from the 3-piece neck it's completely identical to the Columbus-brand J copies from the mid-70s (I've had several!) so I'd be inclined to think it came from the same factory as those. Regarding that neck, many of the "good" Japanese factories used this method, including Kasuga & Fujigen. Anecdotally bodies & necks often came from different manufacturers so I'd be inclined to think that might be the case with this one.

To the OP - unfortunately "Made in Japan copy" is as accurate as it's possible to be with many unbranded basses - pretty much all of the brand names from that era were importer/exporter names & nothing to do with the factories that made them, so unless it's possible to work out which specific factory made the instrument, the best you can say is "70s MIJ Jazz copy".
