Another CSL, a precision jazz? for £160 in Devon

Same bass with a different finish. Not a "Precision Jazz" (wotever that might be!) or an Ibanez rebrand (there's no such thing) but worth a look - still got its ashtrays on so might well be in good condition. Doubt it's a mahogany body on this one though.

Bugger !!
I was winning the CSL but someone sniped it with six seconds to. :(
Fair Play I guess.

70s ibanez sg type bass for £60 in Norwich, surely they've made a mistake when entering the price? I'm guessing it's Jap but not 100% sure.

Someone go buy that. The longscale slot head EB clones are like rocking horse poo and you never, ever see Ibanez-branded ones. Also this one's very early, probably '71 with black button tuners & what looks like a metal headstock badge.

I think the price is correct - bargains like this used to be really common a few years ago, clearly there are still a few people who don't bother Googling before they list their loft clearouts.

What you waiting for??? :D

And another CSL, thought these were rare :P

It does look reasonably nice for £120. How much are they worth. I'm not going to be buying it, but am nothing if not curious about things.

Hard to put a figure on it - the mahogany one sold for £127, there was a 'burst finish one on Gumtree for £160, and this one's up for £120. I suppose that would make £110-£150 a fair-ish ballpark, assuming Gumtree prices to be loaded by about £10 haggle-padding...

Looks like the 'burst finish ones are ply:

So the mahogany looks like better VFM to me. Interesting but irrelevant - mine has the finish worn through at exactly the same place, as did the mahogany one on Ebay. Maybe at some point in history these basses were particularly prized by a sub-species of bassist with highly abrasive abdominal armour.

This Joodee Performer looks good, the unusual truss rod adjuster has been removed, no reserve on it either.

Westbury Track 2, not in great condition for the price but still really like the look of these.

For the record the Joodee isn't a Fujigen - it's a Yamaki build, which is (arguably!) better from a geek perspective. Wish Ebay sellers wouldn't just bullsh!t when they don't know what they're talking about. Shame the original truss adjustment's gone.

The Westy's wildly overpriced, considering it's not even in playable condition. That would be dear for an immaculate one, mind.

Another (probably) Yamaki-built P:

Looks like typical mid-70s build - butcherblock (maybe even ply) body, Gibson-type nut, glued-on fretboard. Not in original condition (new electronics) so the price is somewhat optimistic, I'd say.

And speaking of optimistic pricing:

http://www.ebay.co.u...R-/191566993186

In fairness, I'd love to see this sell for £450 - I have one exactly the same and it's an extremely rare and wonderful bass, if & if pricing for these matched the Aria Pro SBs from the same factory & era, that'd be a bargain. This is the only one of these I've seen, apart from my own.

I'm interested to learn what others recon on this..

http://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/unbranded-p-style-electric-bass-guitar-thru-neck-japanese-1980-s/1112454954

I believe it's a Memphis P, Made about '78. But from recent ads I've seen I think this is a bit over-priced. What do you think?

Posted

No, no, yes?

:D

1 - 99% it'll be a Satellite, Memphis was a US importer rebrand of the same thing.

[sharedmedia=core:attachments:53548]

2 - 1980. I can say this with some certainty because I am an old sod & remember seeing/trying these in my local shop in that very year. They cost £99, which was (even back in the olden days) a total steal for a not too badly-made through-neck. However I was young & poor, and (at the time!) a snobby little brand-Nazi who wouldn't have been seen dead playing anything with "Satellite" on the end.

I got over that & had one of these a few years back. They're OK but not great, Korean-made (none of the Satellite/Kay/Hondo stuff like this was MIJ) and mine weighed a ton. The wood under the stain & heavy lacquer was like random offcuts with lots of filler in the various cracks & holes, the bridge on mine had been routed (badly) about 5mm into the body to make it playable.

They weren't necessarily all like that (QC on cheapos was abysmal back then) but I wouldn't recommend paying more than about £120 max for one of these, and I'd want a proper look at it first.

A few hours to go and this looks like a bargain. Joodee Performer bass. Google throws up stuff that says these are nice - if i weren't up to my ankles in basses I'd have a go at this myself.

This is a bit rare, but I don't remember them selling for this much. Ibanez Musician.

Edit: Nice clean example of a Westone Thunder I.

Is this an SB900? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item33a2161d5f

Looks to be a sensible starting bid to me, and postage is reasonable.
Not a 900, it's an SB-ELT - essentially a post-Matsumoku Elite-II.

Post-Matsumoku? The listing has it wrong. (Which is pretty damn common for basses.)

Concerning SB-ELT and SB-R80, they are very similar looking instruments. After some googling, I think the gold truss rod cover indicates an SB-ELT, does it not?

Possibly... The 'post-Mats' giveaway IMO is the lack of a serial number (probably on a black/gold paper sicker that's long since fallen off), and the 'pointy ears' on the headstock.

It's still a good price though.

While we're on the subject of possible Mat made basses, does anyone know if these were made by them:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Bass-Guitar-Hondo-70s-80s-/121638951728

I see them quite often, and they look like an earlier incarnation of the Westone Thunder and Aria SB style basses.
