King Tut
No personal experience, but they have a good reputation. The Fenix brand was built by Young Chang in Korea, alongside some very similar Squiers they were building for Fender. Understandably, Fender got a bit pissed by this & shut down the Fenix brand, which I guess makes them latter day "lawsuit" instruments. As a result, they can fetch some not bad prices on Ebay, and by all accounts are pretty decent instruments. Edit: A couple of Fenixes on t'Bay at the mo: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fenix-Precision-Styl...emZ180175371966 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/fenix-bass-jazz-copy...6464179QQihZ004 King Tut - sounds like a good score on the Asama (which according to one website, means "Fat Bottom" in Japanese! ) & looking forward to seeing some pics. Bassassin
Blimey - never seen one of those before! Looks lovely - especially for £65. Nice one. It does bear a little resemblance to a thing called a Quest Manhattan. These were Matsumokus, Quest being a sub-brand of Vantage. They had a similar Rick-ish top horn & the same sort of offset body - but realistically, the resemblance is likely coincidental. There are some pics here: http://www.matsumoku.org/models/vantage/ca...hattan/pg5.html Anyway, does it have any identifying marks/numbers/words, other than the name? It might be possible to determine a manufacturer, or its age. Doctor_of_the_bass - really glad someone on here snapped that up - it took an effort of will for me not to bid, even though i'm the world's worst fretless player! Looking forward to some nice pics of that one (& its white fretted counterpart!) in Bass Porn. Anyway - to business. A few more for your edification: A somewhat modded Ibanez Roadstar RB630, tidy looking de-fret, runs out at 10am tomorrow & still at £60. Although the price is being held down somewhat by the utterly ludicrous £30 postage. Will they never learn? King Tut
Nope - no identifying marks at all except for the logo. Nothing in the neck pocket/on the neck butt, nothing in the control cavity, the only place i haven't looked is under the pickups. Also, no serial number. I'm prob gonna gig her on saturday night so i'll let you know how she cuts it live! BTW, just ordered a new bridge and machines from Thomann to bring her up to the 21st century - the G tuner is pretty horrible, and the bridge is functional but v rusty and pitted. Perhaps its slightly detuned, hence lighter tension on the strings. Nick
Good spot - certainly looks full-scale to me - the bridge would be further forward otherwise. I remember these from back in the day - 1980, these appeared, and they cost a mere £99 in my local music shop. At the time it was quite amazing that such well-made & good looking instruments would be branded "Satellite"! The price is why we can be absolutely certain they weren't Matsumokus, or anything else Japanese. Mats of an equivalent build cost about 3 times that amount back then - the Japanese builders were moving out of the cheapo market, and those instruments were starting to be predominantly sourced from the Korean factories. Top of the pile in Korea was Cort - and I'm 99% sure that's what this is. And speaking of Cort, here's a slightly less salubrious product from the same era - this is similar to their early "X-Guitar" model - an X-Bass perhaps, easily identified buy the pretend through-neck transfer on the body: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=140177213589 Considering the condition, it's ridiculously overpriced - I wouldn't pay more than about £25 for something that would need as much work as that. The proper neck-through version of this often appears branded as Kay in the UK (another nightmare brand trying to go upmarket ) - in fact I have one on the slab, down in the lab right at the moment... Keeping it Korean, here's another horrorshow brand aiming for higher things - a mid-80s Hondo original design, coming on like a cross between an EB-0 and a P: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=190171886502 J. Bassassin
Not much to report today, but this might get someone's GAS juices trickling (can I have salad with my metaphors, please? And from the same seller - an Avon brand P copy - which appears to have a bloody great split up the body - which the seller sums up thus:
I mean there is nothing wrong with guitr just been used which is understandable I guess
Used for battering in fence posts, I guess: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Bass-Guitar_...emZ230190310149 A pity because late Avons like this were pretty decent quality, I think low-end Fujigen Gakki, judging from the similarities to Cimars. Possibly an early Fujigen, I once had a Cimar branded one, identical, apart from the pickups & badge: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=250186793371 And keeping it Jazzy, that Ibanez comedy cowboy bass, the Black Eagle, is back for another go. These are stupendously rare, but this one's constant presence on Ebay does suggest that happily, taste is still a factor: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=230191382523 And finally, flinging taste bodily through a 20th storey plate glass window, while pausing only to chainsaw a passing priest & deflower a virgin or two, the delightfully restrained & demure Aria Pro ZZB Custom: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=280172585724 I want that Aria. J.
Typical! I've just shelled out a wadload getting mine from the US & now this fetches up! %&$^%$%($%! Go on Jon - you know you ought to... The lowdown on these... (well, mine anyway) Bridge - Weird. No screw adjusters, but a pair of grub screws that clamp the saddles against the frame. Intonation is set by hand & then you clamp the lot up. Fine tuners work really well. Neck - As slim as a slim Jazz but only a 32" scale - very, very fast. String spacing quite Fenderesque. Balance - Superb - not a trace of neck dive, although it does want to flop forward - I keep mine penned in by draping the strap over the face of the top wing. Works well sat down. Weight - Not a lot. Sound - Aggressive to say the least. I have to wind the tone right back to bring it into line with my tastes. Wide open I think it could give a Rick a run for its money! Downsides - It's bloody long! 52" from tip to tip & there's a lot of space behind the bridge which tends to shift the neck over to the left giving you the feeling you're playing a 36" scale or more (the SB series do this as well). Finding a stand is a pain (I eventually sourced a "Dixon" brand stand in Macari's for £18), & a gigbag seems to be a custom only option (although I'm still looking). Oh, & it needs a very long strap. I'll watch this one with interest, should go up a bit with that paint job & its original branded hard case. The last one I saw on the 'bay was a caseless standard ZZB in turquoise 'burst that topped out at a mere £140, so maybe it won't. Pete. nick
Nice looking unidentified T-Bird http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fretless-bass-guitar...1QQcmdZViewItem And a couple of Columbus' http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Columbus-1970s-Bass-...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Columbus-Jazz-Bass_W...1QQcmdZViewItem Edited November 18, 2007 by nick
Bassassin
A couple of Westones, both in hard cases & very short lisings: A Spectrum, with a highly inappropriate jazz ashtray slapped on it. Have some people got no aesthetic sensibilities? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WESTONE-SPECTRUM-ST-...emZ320184086433 And - another Thunder I! Hasn't everybody already got one? Lovely bit of wood, though. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WESTONE-THUNDER-1-BA...emZ290182376473 More later, I expect... J. Bassassin
It's now later, so here's a few more. A couple of southpaws, a Hondo P: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=200175276950 And a Westone Thunder 1. No, really http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260184089210 Edit: three lefties - another Westone, this time a Speccy: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Westone-bass-guitar_...emZ270188551239 And the T-bird copy Nick posted presumably got pulled for having an unambiguous listing - so now it's relisted so nobody has a fecking clue what it is. Except us lot, of course: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270188516192 That's actually quite interesting. The serial number's consistent with Fujigen Gakki's numbering - which would make it a '77. However, I've no idea what it might be - never seen a factory fretless before, and the bridge & pickups - plus the pickup positioning - are quite different to the Fujigen T-Birds I've seen. Moving on - if my band's guitarist had his way, he'd have me playing something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=130175582713 Prog behemoth or what? Would be interested myself if it was cheaper & fretted - unfortunately have no need for a fretless. Nice looking bass though, & as you say 'interesting'
