I was bought a Kay P-bass for £30 new by my Dad when I first took up the bass.

It was the worst lump of wood to be palmed off as a 'musical' instrument ever to grace this planet.

I've still got it somewhere in the loft.

It was almost impossible to play, the neck was fat the action about a mile high, the frets were in the wrong places!

It's a wonder I ever continued to play......I couldn't wait to get a proper bass!!
Time to put it on ebay for a vastly inflated price.

What, the Mosrite-ish thing with the curly scratchplate? No idea at all, unfortunately. He's only showing the front, so neckplate/tuner/neck construction clues aren't available. Don't think it's JapCrap, my gut feeling would be Italian.

Depends on which one it is - I've had two Kay P copies, mine were the natural finish, strip-ply neck, feels like it's made of lead ones, Taiwanese in origin. After some tweaking both of them set up OK, played not bad & sounded authentic. And I sold both of them for (comparitively) vastly inflated prices on Ebay... :)

Like I've said before, I think a lot of the "starter" basses from years ago came out of the box with necks like bananas & an action you could limbo under - & us clueless kids didn't have the first idea about sorting them. I think that's why so much 70s JapCrap ended up in a skip or flung on the fire.

Sounds like mine - a 'honey sunburst' with a white scratchplate and weighed about 200lb LOL

I'll have to see if I can get it down from the loft and set it up and sell it.

Well - it's only been listed for about 6 hours, so it's hard to say whether it will be any kind of bargain at this point. As for "salvageable" - it looks like a perfectly functional bass with a couple of minor paint chips, from the description - what's to salvage?

I have seen the "Artist" brand come up a few times before - several times on some maple/black block J necks, which definitely didn't look like JapCrap to me. It's not a brand I'd associate with vintage Japanese instruments - but obviously that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with this bass. :)

And don't worry about setting up the Kay - I'll give you £35, cobwebs an' all. It's all clear profit!

Whoop-de-do, it's an Ibanez!

Stupid me, thought it was a Melody M-6600, made in Italy. Must be losing my touch... :)

Indeed I did. I also pointed out that the Fender-type bridge that his guitar tech mate had (allegedly) fitted looks too wide for the narrow Grabber-esque neck, so digging out the original might be a plan.

Not sure why he didn't just edit the text of the original listing - I don't think it had any bids.

The stripey pickguard suggest Teisco, though I've seen others with different brand names - Star springs to mind.

A few years ago I lost an auction for one of those. I don't think it went for anything like £750 ... should have put in a higher bid. :)
