I have never had a nut break on me, but my son's Stagg (bought for Xmas) is suffering.

How difficult is it to get a replacement nut, and fit it? Do these things come in standard sizes or are they unique to each bass?

He's been to a music shop but they are umming and ah-ing.

Any help welcome - I can't believe I'm not better informed!

Hello

It is possible to buy a replacement especially on the cheap.

They are unique to each instrument and need to be set up right it involves quite alot of work and should really be done by a proper guitar tech.

But if you simply want to get it working again, pick up a pre-cut (Pre cut string slots) plastic one from eBay for about a quid.

Good Luck,

Most music shops have a box of them, bring in the bust one, get a good match, get some needle files (model shop if harware place doesn't have dinky ones) and go nots

Or do what I did when unemployed; go to the butchers and file one out of a chunk of bone.

I've seen a good luthier knocking out a nut with one single mallet stroke and a chisel!

From the top edge of the E string he pointed the chisel at the base of the nut without touching any part of the neck and bang one single hit with the mallett and the nut was off, he then got an "allparts" replacement nut, put it side by side with the old nut marked the slots with a pencil, and then with a smal axle he cut the slots, used a special bonding glue slotted the new nut in and restrung it straight away. All this in less than 20 minutes. He sand papered the edges of the nut so it would perfectly match the neck profile too.

Tiny drop of superglue or clear drying pva, so it can pull out easily. I usually just jam them in, cause I change them every time I change string size.
