Build calluses. In the old days (when I were a lad!!! LOL) we used to rub surgical spirit on the ends of our finger to help harden them!

In them days strings were barbed-wire and action was what you got at the weekend! :)

I remember hearing about the likes of Clapton concocting all kind of potions to build up calluses.

Now where did I put my mixing bowl?

That, my friend, is an absolute beauty!

They are the most hideous instruments to play but the most beautiful to look at.

I find them lovely to play too. :) A typical Jazz however; no thanks.

Then you have the hand of Cranfield Man, old egg.

Each to their own as they say :) I find Jazzes as comfortable as anything use but a Ric is just so different to every other bass I've played. Only bass I've really taken a dislike to was a Hofner Club, too narrow string spacing!

Thanks for all the help and advice, I think by paying more attention to left hand technique and ensure I don't pluck too hard is the key to this.

I'm building myself up a playlist of stuff to practise - I've got Tusk (Fleetwood Mac), Money (Floyd), Sirius (APP) and Gimme Some Lovin (BB cover) so far, all of which I love playing along to but also keep my fingers in shape.

I'll report back in a few days and see how the buggers are doing!

I have absolutely no idea what that means. :)

You do know they vary hugely I take it? From wafer thin to P-Bass chunky? Not everyone's cup of tea regardless, but what is? With the exception of the B-Quad 4, its necks that taper from tiny to huge that I really hate.

I find my beloved 1980 Jetglo 4001 an absolute dream to play. I semi retired it due to sentimental value/ increasing values/ rarity, but everytime I pick it up, it just feels so right........Plays itself almost....

Hatched it out for yesterdays band practice, and had it hooked up to my SVT rig..... In fact, stuff it, I'm gonna use it at tonights gig! :)
