jwbassman
Hi Guys Need a little advice from all you Fender Precision aficionados... Looking for a black body, black pickguard, maple neck and maple fingerboard version, don't want S1 just, looking it keep it simply - which model comes in these specifications? Any from the current catalogue or do I need to look further back? I've read a lot recently on the MIJ v US but would consider either at the right price... ideally a 1976 would be amazing but realise this is clutching at straws Appreciate your help John Edited October 29, 2007 by jwbassman
mikeh
Cant really help but show you a pic of mine!!! Black body, black PG, and Maple neck are the perfect colour combo for a P IMHO of course!!
The Burpster
Dont limit yourself by saying it has to Blk/blk maple. Black body+ maple neck yes..... Pickguards are pretty cheap and dead easy to fit.... Just find one you like and if you have to swap the p/g.......So be it.... Believe me it opens up Loads more options!!!!!! jwbassman
Cheers guys... mikeh - I agree the perfect the colour combination - what model is yours, US, MIJ etc? burpster - indeed I have considered that and as you say would open up some more options, so not ruled out

Lee-Man
Try www.valentibasses.com Nino has one of his basses in the spec you want, soo much better than a Fender MIA.
Deep Thought
When I got my MIA P in June, I wanted the same black/black maple combo that you're after. The standard black P at the moment comes with a white scratchplate-they do make it with a black one, but I was told even if you ordered it with a black scratchplate, there was no guarantee it wouldn't turn up with a white one! I ended up buying the black/white one they had in the shop, and ordering a black scratchplate separately and getting it put on, and I am completely happy with it. The S-1 is, as previously discussed, as much use as a handbrake on a canoe, I just don't bother using it.
jwbassman
Cheers guys, thanks for the feedback - more food for thought here, looks like a bit more research required on my part good job I've got a day off tomorrow...
dave_bass5
The MIM Classic 50's comes in black with a maple neck/fingerboard. you would just need to change the scratch plate. £445 from Thomann's. i think im about to order one in HB. 50's Classic in Black My old JV was like this and its a great colour combo to have. In the 80's i had a mirror scratch plate (with holograms on it) but later changed to a black one and it looked really nice. really wish i had kept it. King Tut
It's not for a Pink Floyd tribute by any chance is it!!??
jwbassman
No - not specifically, although the band we are curently trying to get together is certainly influenced by Pink Floyd and we may well cover a couple of their tracks... Thinking about it I saw the Ozzy Pink Floyd a few months back and it's probably that which planted the seed for said Precision, why do you ask? HarryPotter
Because that's what Roger Waters is quite famous for using That's why I want one, but with a Jazz neck.
jwbassman
I know that! Guess it was a bit of a stupid question - doh! It would be good to play in a Floyd tribute band - really enjoyed watching the Ozzy version live. some crappy pictures from my phone... jwbassman
No, nothing so grand I'm afraid - Victoria Park, Southport It was a great show, looked very well presented, probably looked exactly the same on all the other dates they played With it being an all standing affair we managed to make our way up close to the stage which was great too felt really involved and you could really feel the bass too, which was nice

HarryPotter
I just find jazz necks more comfy, so personal preference I suppose. There is almost the perfect thing on the bay at the moment, but it's from everybody's favorite trader in the Fatherland.
jwbassman
There are one or two candidates on ebay at the moment... Tait
I was considering looking for one with Jazz neck - does it make a massive difference or is it just personal preference?
jazz necks are just slimmer. in my opinion they're uncomfortable, they seem to get too thick too fast, but a lot of people love the jazz neck. i prefer the precision neck myself, they're wider at the top so got feel as if its getting wider as you go up the neck. its all really a matter of what you like best. and if you get one with a precision neck, a jazz neck would fit into the body fine, and vice versa. thats what i did to my jazz
obbm
I was considering looking for one with Jazz neck - does it make a massive difference or is it just personal preference?
It depends to some degree on the size of your hands and the length of your fingers. I used to have 76-ish Jap Precision. Lovely bass but too difficult to play. Now I have a '78 P, factory made with a Jazz neck, and it suits me just fine. It doen't come out too often because of it's age however I regularly use a Lakland Duck Dunn which has a jazz neck and is very easy to play. All you can do is go and try and see it it works for you. jwbassman
Cheers guys, looks like I'll give it a go and see how I get on with it - I'm used to playing a 5 so I don't see the width being a problem... Dave, sage advice as always... will a Precision sound great through my BBE Bmax, I hope so

King Tut
I guess i should tell you about mine.....it's an 86 MIJ. I bought it as a bit of a dog - stripped and brush varnished - and had it refinished in nitro black - cos I play in a Pink Floyd tribute band!! it's a maple neck with a 4 piece basswood body - which sounds fine but marks easily. The neck is 1 5/8 inch at the nut which is a nice compromise between the jazz and P necks. However - I needed to be able to get a funkier sound for the Levin/Pratt material so I've had a J pup put in the neck position, with a blend switch. She's also got a badass II fitted. The original pickup sounded OK but wasn't immense so in the neck position I've got a Fender 62 reissue, and in the bridge position I've got an overwound Wizard 84. I've had some electrical probs of late, so I've not gigged it with the Wizard in place, but I think it's sorted now and she'll be going for a trip out this weekend! I think you can ponder all you like the different variances on a particular type of bass but at the end of the day, it comes down to individual pieces of wood - Pleeeease don't buy mail order - you gotta try the actual one you're buying first!
